In real life, thanking someone who has helped you is the done thing. Here, it would have little effect other than to increase the number of posts in a thread by 50%, from two to three.
What is considered appropriate etiquette?

Use PM if you think a thank you is needed.
Another way to handle it is to give some useful feedback on the method and append a thank you. Posts should be "useful".
A good way used on other forums is to modify the thread title (if you're the starter of course) adding a [SOLVED] string at the beginning. This helps a lot when ppl search help :)
