Well, I was not sure if this should go in the XVID or the AVC forum... anyways...

Back in the Doom 9 codec shootout 2005, XVID-AVC was mentioned. (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-main-105-1.htm)

It says January 2006, and its July 2006. I have not been able to find any updates on this. Anyone know whats up?

On May 10th XviD.org said: "Sorry for the lack of news recently. But that doesn't mean there wouldn't be lots of progress in the background. We're currently working hard on a full relaunch of the website with lots of new information. The new site will be online next week. So stay tuned!"

It has been over two months now.

The lenght of a week depends on the work you have to do.. :)

hoepfully they don't take xvid ASP closed source as well. Since the rumor about AVC is that it's going to be closed source.

I doubt that, wouldn't that be exactly against why Xvid also existed in the first place? the server is just down and prolly nothing else, happens now and then.

The only thing about open source that bothers me recently that many developers get into fights and part from being developers and many people that don't respect the GPL and that generally people seem to be glad if they can get free OSS software but themselves will never intend to take part themselves cause they don't like the idea of working for free without getting fame and money for it. Among the ever nagging people there are also many developers that don't like any critics or advices at all and become arrogant towards anyone or get pissed over people being so nosy to even try and criticize sth. they did.

The lack of news has been rather staggering, especially considering that there was a working version quite a long time ago. I would think free beta testers would be helpful. At this point I'm not really convinced that there is ever going to be more news about Xvid AVC.

IMO they want to have comparable or better result than x264 ... and IMO it's really hard to make that ... lol

I do remember someone saying their new website looked like they went corporate ... if legaly speaking they haven't (have they ?), it indeed seems like they "don't have any commentaries to make".

If Doom9 would be allowed to post the version he had in his hands last year, it would at least be a good start IMHO :)

Inventive Software
15th January 2007, 17:18
That depends whether the version he had was GPL'd or not. ;)

Yes, why not.

DarkZell666
15th January 2007, 18:48
Why not ? Having two different implementations isn't a bad thing :)
Wether we actually need it or not will depend on what XviD AVC has to offer over x264.

My first concern is that they had announced something (they've obviously done much work on it too! D9's comparison showed they were more than on par compared to others!) and aren't giving much feedback on what they're doing (not that they're obliged to, no way ;)). It's just so disappointing not to know what's going on ...

to be honest I don't think it's going to be open source. Else it would already have been put out so the community can work on it.

Since being founded in 2001, the Xvid project focuses on MPEG-4 video compression. Early Xvid versions (0.9.x) implemented MPEG-4 simple profile (SP) de- and encoding. The Xvid 1.0 source tree introduced MPEG-4 advanced simple profile (ASP) compression including all advanced coding tools like B-frames, quarterpixel motion compensation and GMC. The upcoming development branch Xvid 2.0 adds support for MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) de- and encoding up to High Profile and dramatically advances upon the compression performance of earlier Xvid versions.

The most outstanding feature of Xvid is the excellent picture quality it provides even at high compression ratios. A major emphasis of the project is put on research to achieve highest possible picture quality and novel algorithms have been developed that enable outstanding detail-richness and image fidelity. The Xvid codec is especially optimized towards offline, multi-pass compression for storage and archival purposes and has been found to deliver superior quality over any other MPEG-4 part 2 based codec by independent third parties.

Xvid is primarily developed for PC (Linux, Windows) but also other popular platforms are supported such as Mac/iMac. Due to extensive algorithmic optimizations and specific support for latest PC processor extensions like SSE2/SSE3 SIMD instruction sets or dual-core/hyperthreading technology, Xvid provides highest performance video de- and encoding on modern PCs. The Xvid ASP and AVC de- and encoder provide highest performance on PC and enable HD resolution video processing on today's hardware. Hence, the Xvid codec library is frequently used in GPLed software players or encoder applications on Windows and Linux such as MPlayer or Transcode.

Summary:
MPEG-4 Video Codec library
SP/ASP/AVC de-/encoding support
Open-source software released under GPL license
Optimized for highest picture quality and archival purposes
Primary platform PC (Windows and Linux)
High-performance due to extensive assembly optimizations

Open source.

I'll believe it when I see the source code with my own eyes.

I indeed already saw that a long time ago.

Well, keep in mind they're only 1 year late (as of right now). In the software world, believe it or not, that's not bad.

Look at vista and other much-anticipated software solutions. Years and years go by and finally a crappy version slips through. I don't mean XviD AVC is going to be crappy (in fact evidence points to the contrary), I'm saying that you should never hold your breath for a software release, even if the devs tell you to :)

And in this case, nobody did any telling ;)

Look here: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-main-105-1.htm
The link was given in the first post in this same thread ;) (and at the bottom of that link, another link points to the pictures produced by each codec for visual comparison)

Doom9 had his hands on a WIP version for his comparison. So if it's "already working", I'm wondering what's taking so long to at least release a public beta (even closed source if they feel the code's too dirty to be read by innocent fragile eyes ;p)

Hmmm, Doom9 was still very postive about it at that point in time. He even mentioned that it would be released @ januari 2006 :o

XviD AVC is, as the name says, the AVC High Profile encoder from the XviD team. It supports all AVC profiles, and by the looks of it, even interlaced encoding. The codec will be made available to the general public in January 2006, under the GPL license as usual.

Too bad that things didn't work out that way :(

The World is changing and i think it's only used @ the moment by XviD Solutions (SDK maybe) for their paying customers and so it's being hold back from Public, but i hope im wrong.

Strange, on the Xvid 2.0 Codec Homepage (http://www.xvid.org/Xvid-Codec.2.0.html) you still can read that there's "AVC de-/encoding support" planned ...
The upcoming development branch Xvid 2.0 adds support for MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) de- and encoding up to High Profile and dramatically advances upon the compression performance of earlier Xvid versions.
... and that it shall be "open-source software released under GPL license"...
Whatever happened to the devs ?

Cheers
