Hi, I'm trying to use the VIVO cable that came with my video card (ASUS Radeon 9600XT) to capture video from my Nintendo 64 and my Playstation, using VirtualDub's video capture function.

It seems to pick up the signal, but the image is all in black and white with weird purple colours flickering all over it. It also seems to have a thick band of distortion along the top. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Your device may be having problems handling non-interlaced input. If you have a Sega Genesis/MD and a copy of Sonic 2, you can test this easily - 1P mode is non-interlaced while 2P mode is interlaced. Thus, if the 2P mode works fine but everything else is bugged, you know it's an issue with the non-interlaced video. Unfortunately, the only way I know of to reinterlace such video is to run it through a time-base corrector, which can be expensive even on the low end.

Try getting virtual VCR or video WDM control and change video input setings to PAL G if your source is PAL or to NTSC if your source is NTSC.That would do the trick I think.
