Are there any dvd players that support video playback in .mp4 format? And video is in x.264 with AAC audio?

Thank you.

yea, i was curious about this too. I don't think there's any, if there are... the scope seems pretty small. i'd have to guess that the general public as well as manufacturers are waiting for this Blu Ray/ HD-DVD tussle to settle. once that happens, the players will slowly incorporate H.264 support. similar to how most DVD players nowadays support divx. this is just my theory. i guess for now, we have to wait.

Wait, there are HD-dvd players on the market right now, correct?
And isn't AVC support part of the HD-dvd standard?

So are you telling me that those first gen players might not actually be able to play future HD-DVD discs that use the AVC codec? That seems like either a very sneaky move or just stupidity on the part of the studios.

Blu-ray also has AVC codec as part of the standard, so I'd especially think that the PS3 will HAVE to include support for it.

Um, to answer my own question, the currently available Toshiba XD-A1 player has AVC support. Took me a while to find "proof" that it does, but if you look in the manual, on page 39... well, I think you'll see.

Also, press reports said that the Xbox 360 HD-dvd player add on will include the Ati h.264 playback drivers.

Now, whether or not they'll play things in the mp4 container... that's a different question... and I'm not about to drop $700 on a crappy first gen player to find out.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 will support the MP4 container. Sony has been talking about interfacing the PSP with the PS3 and it will be stupid not to support the MP4 container, which is the only supported format for video on memory stick for the PSP. At the very least, MP4 files playable on the PSP would also be playable on the PS3.

To what extent they'll support the MP4 container, though, remains a question.

As yet, the player does not support any of them.

And to make matters worse, you can't stream any file types to the player via its ethernet port :scared:

it would be interesting whether the players support avc in .mpg program streams, as hddvd uses mpg ps (i dunno a stable avc -> mpg muxer tough)

A modded XBox with XBMC can play most codecs/containers of all. It even supports Xbox friendly x264.

For me, its the cheapest solution for its price :)

XBox is not powerful enough to decode HD content though right?

True. I think it's CPU is only 700MHz or so. And if you have to limit H264 options for files with, say only DVD resolution, then, HD content is definitely out of the question.

@ bond: Mainconcepts H.264 encoder produces H.264-video included with an MPEG-program-stream. Elecard Xmuxer Pro is able to mux raw H.264-stream into a MPEG-program stream.
Satellite-transmissions from ASTRA 19.2° East of H.264-video-streams have them packed in MPEG-program-streams which again are embedded within MPEG-transport-streams.
