View Full Version : Is there an easy way to re-encode/cut *part* of an XViD file?

I went to make a back up of my "Rescue Me" DVDs. I wanted to get them down to one DVD, so I didn't have to mess around multiple discs per season.

I ripped and encoded them just fine, (XViD/MP3) at ~360 MB per episode with Gordian Knot, (using the doom9 guides) as to fit one season onto one DVD5. I kind of messed up one of my calculations, though, and now the two seasons I ripped and encoded are about 60 MB too big to back up onto a DVD5. (@#$%!!!!)

I don't want to go through all that again for a lousy 60 MB, but I don't want to just straight re-encode everything and lose video quality either. So I fgiured that if I encoded the credits at a lower bit rate (or ideally, as stills), I could get my rips to fit onto a DVD5. I suppose I'd willing to cut the credits if need be, but I don't think I need to free up that much space, and I guess I'd rather have them in some form anyway.

Is there a relatively simple (newbie friendly) technique/program to do this?

you need to familarise yourself with virtual dub

should be relatively easy to do, just rather time consuming and repetetive.

basically you need to

1) cut each episode in to 2 files. ie. main show + credits

2) keep the main shows in a folder for later.

3) then you can either:

append all the credits in to one file and encode one big file to be further chopped up later in to per episode chunks

or

encode each credits section individually

4) stitch each respective show and credits back together with with the append file option again.

make sure you always use the appropriate video processing mode.
