There's not much choice on Mac but I think the choice you do have is an excellent one:

best rename your thread topic. I though it was a post about the OS working on a PC ;)

FFMpeg is pretty good. It is a little difficult to make QT compliant files on though (either that or I fiddle with settings too much ;)). I highly recommend Handbrake. It is very fast and unbelievably easy to use. I hope that they add some more options to choose from 'cause it is a bit too simple, but all in all, this program will make great QT compatible files.
Oh, and use MacTheRipper to get the DVD on the HD.

that is one way (and a good one) however, there are like 100+ other ways :D
tons of open source apps as well as ports from linux of pretty much everything (You can use Fink or Darwinports to get most ports quickly if you do not want to compile them yourself)
As for native stuff everything from final cut pro ($$$) to freeware (which i assume is what the main poster wants so i will list a few of those) works great
HandBrake

then all the apps that can do it in a round about way like
Toast (mainly for burning CD/DVD but can do it also)
if you go to a mac dvd ripping site you will see tons of ways that are not main stream and use all sorts of decrypters and what not written by people into that scene :)
