i was wondering why every body chooses to blank out the dts audio. i would rather just have that then basic ac3 audio. or am i missing something other then personal prefrence?

dts is less compressed than DD, so the size of it is considerably larger, making more compression needed for the video (if its needed in the first place, however if you keep dts, youll probably need some compression).
a lot of people think dts isn't any better sounding than dd, so they just blank the dts soundtrack so less/no compression is needed.

At list in my stero system, there is a difference the sound quality of DTS is bettr. So if compression is not high, I keep the DTS Else I Keep 5.1d.

yeah i use the toslink cable to my pioneer recevier. and think that dts ia a better audiotrack. one of the reason i use ffdshow is the spdif out that you setup in it. i have been around and around fighting for the setting that works without ffdshow for dvd playback and live tv. but i have the nvidia mpeg-2 setup for toslink in dvd playback. in gb-pvr.
and after i typed all that i realized that was not the gb-pvr forums..
but any ways.

well to the few i have compared to yes DTS sounded slightly different, a bit more bass ?, but really saying it was better would have been a stretch. so i think it really comes down to personal preference.
of more concern and reason for removing the DTS to some is size. that is if a large amount of reduction has to be done to the video to fit a dvd5 then removing the DTS track is a good way to get that bit extra back. compare the sizes of DTS tracks to DD tracks sometime.

also, DTS is not supported in a lot of cheaper hardware players.

yeah good point.
same goes for pal or ntsc dvd's
but i guess once you choose which audio to keep you can't go back with something that is not there any more

I think the modified Jurassic Park dts track is responsable for a lot of this "dts it better" crap that pops up every now and then.
I never keep dts on backups.

do you use toslink for playback?
I find DTS is nearly always better than DD (about 95% of the time). It is not just equal to DD being louder as some people suggest. It can take more expensive equipments to tell the difference though.
I would think all DVD players can do DTS by now. Even my £20 player does it and I have had DTS since 1999.
I usually do one for backup with DD 5.1 and another with DTS 5.1. I then have one backup for the TV and one for my Projector/Surround sound setup.

most do but they use the toslink pass through for external decoders. atleast that is what i have seen on a few models that i bought for other people.

running wires form each jack on the sound card would suck.

Yep, that decoded DTS really sounds good coming from the 4 inch mono speaker in my kids TV. ;)
It's really a personal preference...for the DVD's I backup for my kids it would be a waste of bits that I could apply to the main movie for higher quality.

only reason for me do both would be so the parents can watch the movie on their dvd player. and then i usally make two backups with both formats.

I love DTS.
(This has got something to do with DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/)?)

do you also play both though ? if not then why not get rid of one, especially when the output will be very low bitrate encode, to add that little extra back to the video ?

well the question is about blanking audio with DVD-RB. ;)
