What's encrypted inside a VOB file?

A VOB file contain video, audio and subtitles.
I know the video is encrypted, but are the audio and subtitles encrypted as well?

Well, according to NVIDIA's DVD Decoder, both the video and the audio data is encrypted when CSS is in use. In the properties dialog of the player the (hopefully) exact percentage of the encryption is being displayed. Amazingly, the values vary while playback.
I'm not sure if the subtitles are encrypted as well, but I doubt that. Someone could examine this by demultiplexing an encrypted VOB and check the resulting subtitle stream against the one you get from an unencrypted VOB. But somehow, most demuxers seem to have serious problems processing encrypted containers. Maybe some of the navigation packets get scrambled as well.

The data on a DVD is not encrypted. It is encoded or compressed with a known standard. This is a sensitive issue with this group because several courts have said it is illegal to break something that is "encrypted" and occasionally someone will says something like the Sony "Arccos" is an encryption scheme, which it is not, it is a copy protection scheme.

Sorry, just don't want this "lingo" to proliferate.

Of course there is an enryption scheme on a DVD. Its usage is optional and it's called CSS. :-)
