View Full Version : Frame Capturing (MPEG2) - Simple Question

I'd like to capture some specific frames from a widescreen DVD (MPEG2) using Virtualdub. Using the "capture source frame to clipboard" option produces an image which is stretched vertically (wrong AR). I'm sure I've done this in the past, but it's been so long I don't remember how.
So, my question is simply: How do I capture frames from a WS MPEG2 source maintaing the correct AR?
I am not interested in alternate solutions: (e.g. Image Grabber, PowerDVD, WMP etc.) I simply want to use VDub to navigate frame by frame and capture specific frames.
Thanks!

It isn't wrong AR, the picture is anamorphic. If you have loaded the VOB, VirtualDubMoD will display the exact frame size as designed.
You can either capture all the images as is and then do a resize/resample later using an image editor or mpeg2source the source in, after applying a resize in the avs script. But then, you no longer would be able to skip through keyframes.
I recommend capturing as is and batch resizing later. What you might have done in the past must have been on an avi/mkv having a proper AR to start with.

Hi!
Actually, I believe if you simply set the "Resize" filter in VirtualDubMOD to the desired resolution, you can then simply move to the desired frame and select "Copy OUTPUT to clipboard", load it into a graphics or "paint" program and save...

ahhhh, indeed. That is another way, and perhaps the most convenient. Either Copy output frame to clipboard, load into an image editor and save (like you said) or directly save using Snapshot output frame.

Thanks for the help you two. :)
I suspected one of my DVD's I'm backing up had the wrong AR listed on the box. I wasn't sure what to resize the width to to maintain the correct AR. Amazon said that the NTSC is 1.85:1 (my copy) and the PAL is 1.77:1. So, I wanted to take some screenshots from various scenes when correctly resized (playing in a software player). I ended up taking a screenshot using VLC and removing the black bars to figure out the real AR. I'm sure this sounds really confusing, but I think (and hope) I have things figured out now.
