Drive choice makes a difference?

I have two drives and I generally rip with one of them and don't use the other so much. I tend to use the newer drive. I've noticed though that it may be more sensitive to scratches, dirt, etc. For example, today I was using DVDFab Decrypter to rip a disc and it wouldn't get past a certain point with the ripping (about 2/3 through VTS_01_1). I switched drives and the rip went fine. Or so I think. I tried ripping with RipIt4Me too (in my preferred drive) and in a pop-up window it mentioned that the disc may be dirty or scratched as two cells were not readable but not protected either.

My question is whether I can figure out if the rip in my not-so-favourite drive is okay without watching the whole thing looking for jumps or flickering? Is the drive possibly more robust so it can read dirty stuff easier, or is it possibly just making a hash out of it? Is this indicative of some sort of copy protection? If DVDFab Decrypter doesn't give any errors should I just be happy that it ripped it?

My two drives are
Favourite: NEC 3520A (DVD Reader/Writer)
Not so favourite: LG GDR8161B (DVD-ROM)

Often slowing down a rip in a fast drive will help it get thru OK.

If DVD Decrypter says no read errors at the end, it has made it thru OK.

Also, RipIt4Me (http://www.digital-digest.com/software/RipIt4Me.html) v1.1 has a warning screen if you have a scratched DVD. If that doesn't appear, you're good to go.

This may (I haven't examined it myself, but have read about this) now have been addressed in the recently released version 2.9.8.0, so that you are advised of unreadable sectors and asked what you'd prefer to do...

I have finished running extensive tests on drives/media. For whatever reasoning, there is a difference in drive sensitivity. My old NEC 3500 would read through surface scratches that would cause CRC errors in my newer NEC's. Unfortunately, Nero Speed wouldn't test my 3500, so I can't give you an answer, as to why, other than it would.
