When importing a .sup subtitle file, would setting the extension to "forced" be the same as adding one of those SetSTN commands in the .mxp file that lets you autostart a subtitle file when the movie starts?

No, "forced" is only a description of the subpicture for the user's information. And it is not related to SetSTN, but the commands within the subpicture stream which cause the subpictures to be displayed even if the stream is selected but "off".

Oh okay. Thanks for clearing that up.
It's been a while since I last edited a .mxp file to have a subtitle file startup with the movie. Can you tell me if this is how you do it still?
------------------------
Item=Pre Commands
{
SetSTN subpicture=1:ON
}
------------------------
Correct. That command would set the first TRACK to be displayed as ON. If the command was OFF but the substream was set to FORCED=YES then the subs would still be displayed.
You know how in movies if a foreign language is spoken at some point in the movie (ie different to the main language track) then subs are shown even if you have turned them OFF.
I believe the actual set of forced subs to be shown is determined by the SPRM2 register (which is a player setting). Perhaps mpucoder could confirm this :D

So wouldn't it be good practice to do the SetSTN command as well as setting the subs to forced=yes? Or does that cause problems, and only doing one or the other is suggested for forcing subs to start automatically?

Subs get forced by a command within the subpicture stream itself, not by the SetSTN command. Each subpicture can be displayed either normally or forcedly. All the SetSTN command does is determine which subpicture stream is decoded, and whether the subpictures with a normal start are displayed.

So for instance, my dvd has 2 sub files (english and spanish), if I set both to forced=yes, but I set the SetSTN command to ON for the english subs, then only the english subs would auto-display?
