Using Tmpgenc, I'm attempting to reencode an mpeg2 video stream and match as closely as possible the original quality of the source. I'm not trying to shrink, so the output size does not matter.
The original source in the vob is an MPEG-2 720x480 4:3.
Gspot info -
Pictures per second : 23.976
Frames per second : 29.970
Frame Aspect Ratio : 1.500 (3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio ("SAR"): 0.889
Display Aspect Ratio ("DAR"): 1.333 (4:3)
Average Video Bitrate (kbps): 8000
Interlaced : I/L
3:2 Pulldown : 3:2
Broadcast standard : NTSC
Ifoedit lists the stream as MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC 525/60) (4:3) (not specified perm.display).
The double-clicked properties of that line with
radio buttons selected on VBR, Camera, and field 1 in GOP.
For the setup, I first loaded the Vobs into DGIndex. The stream is Film, so I selected Force Film with Audio Disabled and created a d2v project file.
Following this guide http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/tmpg-dvdencoding.htm , in Tmpgenc I select MPEG-2 as stream type
4:3 as aspect ratio, 23.976 (internally 29.97 fps) <- from Encode mode set to 3:2 pulldown when playback.
Following are some encoding questions.
Since Ifoedit had VBR selected, I'm guessing this is how the movie was encoded. In DGIndex, the bitrate also varied.
What 2-pass VBR settings would be used to match the 8000Kbps average, as in the Average, Maximum, and Minimum? Or would CBR provide better quality?
I'm also confused about the Source aspect ratio. When loading the file, Tmpgenc defaults this to 4:3 525 (NTSC, 704x480), even though the original is 720x480. Should I leave this as is or change it to plain 4:3 Display?
I did a test run with the 4:3 525 (NTSC) setting (without the 704x480), and the movie displayed incorrectly compared to the original.
With Honor Pulldown Flags selected for Preview in DGIndex, the Field Order is Top. Should the Field order in Tmpgenc be changed to - Top field first (field A) (the default was Bottom), or does this matter since I used Force Film (no Field Order listed)?
For the GOP structure, I do not know what to select here, except for what the tmpg guide suggests. If I run Create Tmpg Template in Ifoedit, I get IBBPBBPBBPBB for I frames only and mostly the same if all are selected, but I have no idea what this means.
