View Full Version : 480x576 DVB-S rip to 480x368 xvid?

I've read the stickys but I'm still not quite sure about this problem. For a test I've recorded an mpg file with DVBViewer which turns out to be 480x576. Now when I make an xvid out of it using AutoGK I get file of 480x368 no matter if I choose fixed width 480 or maximum width.

Is this supposed to be like this?

Does your 480x576 DVB-S captured source play back with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9?

It looks like 4:3 in Media Player Classic which is confirmed by Properties > Details > Video Size: 480 x 576 (AR 4:3). The avi shows 480 x 368 and no AR info at all.

In that case there's nothing stopping you from generating an MPEG-4 encode at 480x576 and adding 4:3 DAR signalling - which equates to an aspect ratio signalling (ARS) value of 8:5

Except that I'm not sure where to set those settings :(

advanced:
maximum width

hidden options:
override input/AR: 4:3

The maximum width of 480 does set the 576 height automatically? Or would I select Auto Width?

I'm still a bit confused as to why AutoGK encoded at a lower height since the source material came flagged as 4:3 already.

Sorry... but I'm unable to help you with AutoGK's setting options...

Thanks anyway. I hope someone else can cause I've tried width auto width, fixed width, maximum width and set the aspect ratio flag but in all cases I'm left with a file of 480x368.

A resolution of 480x368 provides a "square pixel" aspect ratio of 1.304:1 - which is very close to 1.33:1, ie: 4:3.

However, with such a reduction of vertical resolution (from 576 to 368) you will loose quite a bit of fine detail - even if you encode at a high bitrate

Right. That's why I'm keeping my mpg in the hope that someone else can shed some light on as to why AutoGK thinks it has to do this.

...why AutoGK thinks it has to do this.I probably can't help solve your problem, but an AutoGK log file might contain useful information for len0x or others.

Of course. I've attached the log and also uploaded a small part of the original file (http://www.mytempdir.com/766426) (password is the name of the tool in question with the same combination of case letters). I've cut this piece with Mpeg2VCR and saved it as mpeg2 program stream, this shouldn't make a difference concerning the problem in question.

Hi,

I could'nt download your file and the log is not yet approved (you could just copy/past in your post). But if the question is how to keep orginal resolution (480/576) in your encode it seems a no crop question.
If so open hidden options (CTRL/F9) mark the tune autocrop checkbox and insert 0 (zero) instead of 34 in the threshold box.
You're done.

I used these settings:

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/413/autogk5lh.th.png (http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=autogk5lh.png)

and it still did not work. The resulting file's resolution is too small. Here's the log:

You probably needed to check "Override input AR" and select 4:3, and uncheck "Detect and force 4:3."

SeeMoreDigital

Hmmm!

Your DVB source runs at 25 fps and yet you have 23.976 selected.

And I guess you need to check "Override Input AR" and un-check "Detect 43 (Global Option)"

I don't know if you have to do anything with the "Tune AutoCrop Parameters" though....

Hopefully an AutoGK expert can set you straight ;)

Chetwood

Phew, I gotta try "override" on and "detect" off. BTW, I do not have 23.976 selected, this option is only active when .fps is checked which is not the case.

Edit: No matter which combination of settings I use I can't get it to encode to the source resolution of 480x576.

Would be nice if some of the experts could give it a try and then let me know about which settings he used. Thanks.

I've tried another DVB-S rip, this time the 720x576 result in 720x544. Any expert out there?

Do you have tried Fixed width 720 or 640 option?

Chetwood
12th July 2006, 14:25
Yes, I did but it did not work. However, someone over at german Doom9 told me what to do to keep the original resolution: set "override input AR" to original in the hidden settings.

However, since AutoGK does not encode anamorphic it's probably best to let it change resolution and live with the softened effect on your standalone.
