Hi, I have a Sony Cybershot digital camera and it records movies in mpeg-1 format. I want to burn them to a DVD to be playable in a standard DVD-player but I don't want to convert the video. Is this possible in any way, or will I have to convert? I am set up to do so, but I don't want to have to go to all that trouble every time I make some movies, which I do often.

You can only do it in VCD format, and then only if the Cybershot outputs VCD-compliant MPEG-1. Are you certain it's not MPEG-2? It seems terribly inefficient for a camera to use MPEG-1, as a bitrate high enough to contain any real quality would make a huge file.

It would also help to know what program you currently use to create DVD's from your camera video. Some programs always re-encode, some only re-encode for transitions or editing at points not on I-frames.

Don't know if this will help but you might want to try VSO DivXtoDVD v0.5.2b (Freeware). It claims to do mpeg.

@Acidfly

To possibly avoid any extra effort, you might want to check to see if your standalone player is cpable of playing unconverted MPEG-1 videos...

Yes they are MPEG-1's - this is just a digital still camera, not a video camera - it makes 30fps movies but they are huge (about 100MB per minute). Thus they won't really fit on anything but a DVD. The problem I am running in to is that no programs (and I have tried many) will let me put mpeg's onto a DVD. The movies are VCD-compliant, what I need to know is if there is any way to basically make a VCD but on DVD?

mpeg-1 with a resolution of 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL) is acceptable for DVD-Video, and ALL authoring programs, even the free ones like MuxMan, accept this. If the audio (if any) is also mpeg you may have to seperate it from the video (demux) externally (some programs can take multiplexed streams, others can remultiplex the stream to ensure compliance).

First off, I don't just want a data DVD, I want a disc that will be playable on most any DVD player. And I forgot, the MPEG's are not entirely compliant - the resolution is 640x480. Ah, maybe I will just make data DVD's, I guess most players could handle those.

DVD players will not read 640*480(This resolution is more like MPEG2 rather than MPEG1), you'll have to convert the mpeg to 720*480 or 704*480(NTSC), 720*576 or 704*576(PAL).
