Nerovision capture problems

Hi I am new to trying to capture video from a camcorder and am having some problems. I am attaching a canon v40 hi8 with the kind of wires that have red, yellow and white heads. I open nerovision and it says that my capture device is a Medion BDA analog capture and below that is a black screen which is where the video should be. Beneath that it says channel 4 and beneath that it says that no signal is detected and that recording is disabled. I have also tried to capture using windows movie maker and receive unspecified errors and using powercinema I can only record a black screen. I looked at some of the guides provided on this site and it says you have to tune channels with the tv program that came with your video card but I have absolutely no idea how to do that, so any help would be appreciated.

You need to understand your wires -- the ends of the wires have "RCA Connectors" on them. Red and White are for stereo sound. The Yellow RCA Connector is Composite Video.

Composite video is one of several ways in which to transfer analog video signals from one device to another. It is called "composite" because while it does not include sound, it is a composite of all of the various video signals that make up analog video -- various chroma (color), luma (brightness) signals, and video sync are all in that composite signal.

Channels are used by radio frequency (RF) transmissions -- broadcast television and cable television, in VHF or UHF. This is NOT the type of connection you are using. If you were, you would have coaxial cable and likely the F connectors that screw in.

In general, the quality of analog video signals is ranked from lowest to highest in the following order. (In general, because hardware components and cable quality can have impact.) RF Composite S-Video (DIN connector) Component (multiple RCA)

I don't use nerovision, so I cannot tell you how to set it to capture composite.

Thanks for replying, I do understand the function of the wires (I know I dont show it) I think the problem is with the configuration.

In the capture guide, chapter 6 shows capture using both VirtualDub and VirtualVCR.

When using Vdub, I note the guide expects you to be able to find the video device input setting on your own (tuner, composite, s-video). When using VirtualVCR, it shows you where to set that in the GUI -- which happens to be on the devices tab.

I would point you to the appropriate Vdub menu, but I no longer have an analog capture card and can't recall exactly where that's set in Vdub, since its been so long since I've used it. You should be able to find it on your own fairly quickly and easily, if you wish to try Vdub capture.

If you're using commercial software (Nerovision, powercinema, etc) you'll have to look at the vendor's documentation, or contact the vendor for support.

In virtualdub I have gone to capture avi, then source, then composite and when I do that the display screen turns from snow to complete black. So still have no idea. Thanks for your time anyway
