Goal: I want to use a 3 minute clip from an Xvid/VBR mp3 file in Vegas 4. Vegas 4 will not recognize either Xvid or VBR mp3, so I have to reencode.

Problem: I open in VDubMod and I get the Yes/no to changing headers because it's VBR (Gspot says LAME).
I've tried to:

open the file in VDM, press 'no' when asked to re-write to CBR, then choose your divx settings, set video to "fast recompress" (important!) and encode!

the file is unstable, the audio plays repetively in Vdub and then it crashes. If I say yes, the file opens and then it's out of synch, increasingly so over the course of the file.

Solution, but with a twist I would like explained, if possible: I opened the file in Avidemux. Avidemux asked to build a vbr time map and then rebuilt the index. The file was in synch. To quote the mayor, Huzzah. I then saved with Video set to copy and Sound set to Wave PCM. That played fine in VDub. But when I reencoded the Video to Pegasus Mjpg and left the audio as is, the audio plays "choppy" in Vegas, the graph showed silences and then bursts of sound. It was only when I saved to Wave in VDub and remuxed in Vegas that I ended up with good, in synch audio.

It would be nice if I could do this all in VDMod, but the main question I have is about the difference between

1. taking the Avidemux output, recoding the video in VDub direct streaming copying the sound and then having a sound problem in Vegas, vs.

2. saving to Wav in VDub and smoothly remuxing in Vegas after I delete the sound that comes with the video reencode.

What is the difference in sound output? Thanks for any ideas.
