Fixing an episode which stops playing in certain second

Hi, I have an episode, which always stops playing in certain time. It doesnt matter which player I used, it just stops as if it ended, and if I try to manually go ahead before it reaches that second, it also stops.

Although the very same file once played fine, when I burned it on dvd. and watched it at least once since I burned it.

Now, I even copied it back to the hdd without any special problems, but it still stops and doesnt allow me to even skip the problematic second.

I am not sure to which section this would belong, not even sure which keywords to use in this forum/google to try and find solution..

So my question is, wether there is a tool which can fix this problem? or help getting started by determining the cause of it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the following:

1) Load the .AVI file (XviD-compressed or otherwise) into the most

recent version of either VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod

2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"

3) Select "Scan videostream for errors"

4) Select "Mask bad frames"

5) Save with a new filename

hmm ok, what I did is this: I loaded the .avi file via file-> Open Video File.

Then it gave some warning about no index or something, and started doing some scan, showing this as a result:

[!] AVI: Invalid chunk detected at 14488478. Enabling aggressive recovery
mode.

[!] AVI: Keyframe flag reconstruction was not specified in open options and
the video stream is not a known keyframe-only type. Seeking in the video
stream may be extremely slow.



After that, I made steps 2 and 3 (under the Go menu), with no error messages or anything.

After that, I couldnt find where to do step 4, so I skipped to step 5 and saved the new avi.

The result? well, 1:44 min episode :D
Which btw is exactly where the original stops playing...

So, can you explain with more details please on how to do step four (I assume thats the cause..)?

Based on what you've now posted, it seems to me that you have an incomplete and corrupted file, for which I doubt you can do anything further to recover...

But this episode was copied from dvd with 12 others, all I watched more than once before, and they all were fine, even this one...

How would it become completly corrupt and unrecoverable?

Rather than speculating as to why this file is problematic/corrupt/incomplete, the simplest solution would be to once again copy it from your DVD...

The dvd itself has same problem, although maybe half year ago I watched that file from the dvd and it was fine...

What setarip_old meant was that you should return to the source material from which the original file was encoded, not the disk from which the defective .AVI was transferred.
