Hi, HD-DVD and Blu Ray are on shelves now, so this could mean the definitive death for original D-Theater tapes, no longer supported for a long time by movie majors. Anyway, it's not a good thing that no one can make a digital backup copy of his own tapes, which had a price higher than new format discs. It's important to have a backup copy of a media we have payed a lot. Surfing the interenet, all the forums declare "Never Backup" about D-Theater tapes because of the 5C-DTCP protection; I bought the original service manual and schematics of the JVC HM-DH30000U deck and knew the following about the IEEE1394 output:
When the CGMS-D of D-VHS playback contents is 01, the output is muted. In this event, the user is
warned by a caution message appearing on the on-screen display.
In case of the HM-DR10000, it normally outputs such the contents differently from the description of Table
7. In this case, the CGMS-D of the output digital contents is 01.

I've shown all this informations to engeneers and all of them told me it's almost impossible to have the IEEE opened to backup a tape on another deck or PC.
Anyway a look at this matrial could be interesting for HM-DH30000U owners.
Another news is about the Hitachi DT-DR20000 (a japanese D-VHS deck very hard to find ), it reports the chance to operate with "tracking" on this model to make the deck read the .TS stream only and skip the 5C-DTCP signal, Can anyone confirm it's possible? Does anyone know if the protection signal is really recorder on a different side of the tape? Thank you for all your help
