MPC + ffdshow.ax preconfigured (stand alone on CD)

Hi,

I'm looking for stand alone (= without installation) playback system for win32 to put on CD or DVD along with the video file. mplayer (the linux one) does work well for many formats, but the interface is less than ideal IMHO on win32 (GUI version included), VLC should also work I think, but haven't tried it for that purpose. I'm looking for a true win32 system, because it's more integrated, and just for the fun of it :)

So, I was thinking of using MPC along with ffdshow.ax and possibly other filters that are not neccessarily on all systems, by using MPC option to load specific filters from HD, and save the entire configuration into an INI file. ffdshow files are available either from pre-installed ffdshow, or by extracting the ffdshow NSIS installer (using 7-zip).

I gave it an hour or so and noticed several things:

- even after disabling all checkboxes in MPC, it still loaded filters from the system. why? unchecking the boxes should instruct MPC to use internal version of the filters.

- I added ffdshow.ax as an external filter by using the "browse" button. 4 filters were added (mp4, audio, etc) cool. however, it crashed whenever I tried to dbl-click it, or load a video clip.

- Assuming I was able to make MPC use ffdshow.ax, can ffdshow.ax be configured through it's own INI file? how do I do that?

You mean the checkboxes under "internal filters"? Unchecking them actually disables the internal filter in favor of an external! And ffdshow and MPC both store their settings in the registry, so importing a premade .reg file should be sufficient.

As for the crashing, was ffdshow.ax registered correctly and also is it a cpu incompatbility?

MPC can hold its settings in an ini file too ! It was created to put MPC on a changable media (eg. CD/DVD, pendrive ...).

@foxyshadis: ffdshow.ax was NOT registered, but that was the point of the experiment. load it directly from MPC using the pre-configured INI file, and let MPC take it from there (reg/unger as needed)

@chros: yup, that's what i was doing. however, even before the ini i wasn't able to playback using only manually loaded filters..

just as an example of what i want to achieve:

- let's take an xvid clip with some audio format that's not supported on win2k/xp out of the box. let's say the comtainer is AVI.

- now i want to put on the CD: MPC, one or more ini files, required filter/dll files from ffdshow (audio decoders included), such that when you run MPC, it reads the ini files (happens automatically if one exists), loads the filters/dll it needs (ffdshow's) and just start the playback on ANY win2k/xp machine, regardless of installed codecs.

anyone have any experience with such procedure?

same question here, only using coreavc+halli+mpc? (no, i dont want that my coreavc will stay registered on some random machine.)

or maybe mplayer + coreavc?

ffdshow is too complex for that
if you need _only_ MPEG4 ASP decoding try XviD decoder
