difficulty decrypting Nausicaa

I am trying to backup Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind using Dvddecrypter, however it fails once it reaches vts_01_4.vob. here is the log

the disc does not appear to be scratched and plays fine. I have tried using dvdfabdecrypter and dvdshrink with similar results. any ideas, anybody? thanks

Despite your observations, your disk is scratched, damaged or smudged. Try to clean it.

The fact that it plays OK does mean it is 100% byte for byte (which you need for a good rip).

I have had a very similar problem with (a couple of) heavily used disks of a video club...
They had been stored in space saving plastic boxes which left a 'cloudy' ring on the disk's surface near the outermost diameter - I think that's VTS_01_4.VOB!
Meanwhile i have given away these disks - therefore i cannot verify if it really could have been the same problem.

I guess it would be a good idea to give h2cdimage a try:
After opening the disk with a player (?) You can start copying to an ISO-file.
On successfull completion this image can be mounted with daemon-tools and decrypted with dvdd ;)

... please let me know if it works!
(btw - i have backed up my german/pal version without problems - great movie!)

VTS_1_4.VOB is probably bang on the layer break... so yeah, the extreme outer edge of a (full) DVD-9.

which region is this disc (i hope it isn't region 4 :))? it may be a bad pressing. it might also not be agreeing with your drive.

try a scanning program like CD-Speed, DVD-info Pro, K-Probe or Plextools (the latter two only work with lite-on/sony for K-probe, and plextor drives for plextools). if there's any nasty error spikes hanging around you'll see them.

on closer inspection the disc does have a scratch. i exchanged it and everything works fine. thank you all for your help.
