View Full Version : empty .M2V, retrying

Hi, I posted this topic also on DVD RB official forum, but looks like developpers are on holidays, hope I'm not hammering anyone

Recently, I begun expieriencing this issue when backing up in Full movie mode. I also get crashes and hang ups (Dr Watson Post Mortem, File access error...). I restored my system from a backup, and thought it was Kaspersky AntiVir 6.0 or ZoneAlarm Pro 6.5, but removing them didn't change anything. Reverted to older backups, with older DVD-RB / CCE SP versions, same issue

What keeps getting out is:
- Creating M2V for VTS_03 segment 19
-- V03001900020001 empty .M2V, retrying

Often they work on retry, sometimes they give this message:
- Creating M2V for VTS_03 segment 19
-- V03001900020001 empty .M2V, retrying.
- Creating M2V for VTS_03 segment 19
-- V03001900020001 empty .M2V, retrying.
- Creating M2V for VTS_03 segment 19
-- Zero length .M2V file for V03001900020001.
So, segment fails

I attach my rebuilder.log file, and rebuilder.ini file
The rebuilder.log file includes log from encoding same movie, same parameters, same config
On first TEST, encode finished with some successful retries
On second encode TEST, it retryed different segments, and failed on one segment, then I aborted

I made many searches, and it was suggested that HD problems are the cause. It is not my case, I have 3 HD on system, and issue is with the 3 HD as working/output folders

The new thing, is that I rarely backup full movies, but often main movie only. All of my tests, the retry errors never happened on main movie VTS files, so it could be a bug with full movie mode (extras). I'm using it on FOX_AND_THE_HOUND movie, andd always get skips on extras only (tried about 15 times, different system combinations, same errors). I also tried disabling menue encoding, and played with different encoder priorities, nothing changed. On movie only mode, no problem, and never had errors on main movie VTS segments, even in FUll Mode

Hope someone will soon come to help

Many thanks

welcome to the forums jonny_ftm,

I'm thinking this is a ripping problem, what methods do you use to get the files to hd??

Those error messages can be caused by two things:

1. The encoder is having issues and is bombing. Have you recently changed/upgraded your encoder? This is the most likely cause.

2. A corrupt source. DVD-RB is detecting video during it's scan based upon the headers, but DGDECODE either can't decode it or fails to find a picture in that segment during decode -- this would likely be due to corruption in the source.

@l8nights
I use clonedvd2 and anydvd, regularely updated to last builds. For a same movie, the errors appear at different segments, randomly. So it can't be a ripping error, otherwise, it will be always in same segment.

@jdobbs
I use CCE SP, 2.70.02.10, reverted to 2.70.02.09, same problem, also with DVD-RB 1.92
For the source corruption, same as answered above, it would happen always in same segments. ALso, after one retry, the encoding seems to work, if I do believe the log

I attach my last rebuilder.log file + rebuilder.ini, the ones I work with. Rebuilder.log is for two movies, the first, main movie only, the second, Full movie

Hope someone will help me with these issues

Are you saying you are getting it on more than one movie? If so, that sure sounds like a system problem that is causing the encoder to crash... are you overclocked?

jonny_ftm
20th June 2006, 18:26
Yes, it happens now on all movies, no matter. I'm not overclocked. Had recently many crashes and discovered my heatsink failed (broken heatpipe?). I got a Zalman CNPS9500 and I'm on the cool side. Downloaded HD Tune, and my 3harddrives are reported to be fine and not overheating. CPU, a P4 650 is around 55°C and MB around 42 on full load. System is stable running two prime95 sessions on max heat mode.

As I said, I stopped zonealarm and antivirus services. I also removed m2v file association with mediaplayers so they don't lock it. XP doesn't seem to have a preview for m2v files like with avi, so I don't think the system locks them...

Could be memory. CCE uses the upper memory addresses that rarely get hit by other apps. You may want to try temporarily underclocking your FSB or memory clock ratio and see if the problem goes away...

I will let memtest run on my system. Could it be mem modules got damaged during my motherboard reinstall!!!

I will first try a 6 monthes older system backuo and see if the problem persists. If not, I update on that backup to last builds of encoder/RB and see again. This will show if it is hardware/software issue, in simpler way
I feed back when finished

jdobbs

Just a warning... memtest doesn't catch all memory problems -- if you do a search you'll see lots of memory problems that were revealed by CCE but weren't caught by memtest.

Also -- note that the software is not experiencing this problem on other computers (at least no other reports are pending) -- so that also makes a strong case for a system issue.

Hummm,
Restored a backup of december 2005, and made an encode without problem, same parameters. At least my hardware looks fine.
On this restore, I will now install last builds of RB-pro and CCE SP I have, and try again. If no problems, it is a software issue, I believe. Also, following your advice, I skipped doing memtest, since my other system uses are fine
Thank you so much for your help, I will feed back as soon as finished one or two encodes right now

Well, on my system backup dated dec 2005, reinstalled DVD-RB 1.093 + updated to CCE SP 2.70.02.10, and encoding is smooth, no errors.
Can I assume my mem modules are fine? I do believe it. Looks like some fishy software interactions. Kinda something locking disk/file accesses
I will try to update XP through MS Update, update all drivers, install KAV/ZAP, and make some more encoding

Really strange
Let me know please if you have some more ideas/tips

Yeah, memory isn't likely then. Looks more like a software conflict of some kind now. Had you changed AVISYNTH versions recently?

jonny_ftm
21st June 2006, 18:07
humm, maybe yes. I updated AutoGk, witch is bundled with avisynth, can it be the issue? I didn't know DVD-RB uses avisynth

jdobbs
21st June 2006, 22:27
Yes. DVD-RB uses AVISYNTH as a frame server during encoding to make its huge library of filters available for processing the video.

Ok, I'm finally advancing
It seems in fact not to be a DVD-RB / CCE issue. The error now reproduces its self when the computer is running for some hours, without DVD-RB. It is a Dr Watson Post Mortem debugger error that happens with every new opened application, and it closes it. Probably the debugger clausing CCE encoding sessions. I don't know what's causing the kernel debugger faults. Maybe alcohol 120% soft...
But, of course, this is not the right forum to ask.
Many thanks for your help, and yes, I can confirm it is not DVD-RB fault, since I installed my previous backup, updated XP to last MS hotfixes, installed all my drivers updates, multimedia, USB TV and QuickCam drivers, and encoding is smooth

By the way, reinstalling AviSyth didn't stop the debugger errors

Hi, I post back, my sad issue
It seems to be really a DVD Rebuilder issue

I bought a new MB as mine was scratched behind the CPU (I had a P5WD2 Premium, I got a P5WD2-E Premium, both from ASUS). I also changed my memory: Corsair DDR800 2x512 Mb DDR2 CAS5 modules instead of my old DDR533

Well, same issue after a fresh reinstall of my OS (winXP) and my software/drivers

I use Kaspersky Internet Security v6.0.300 also.

Please, any help is really adviced, as DVD-rb is my most used program in the PC

jdobbs

It seems to be really a DVD Rebuilder issueReading back through the thread I don't see how you can come to that conclusion.

1. How many discs have you tried to encode?
2. Is the error still "No M2V" -- if so, it means that either the configuration is bad or CCE is failing.
3. What version of DVD-RB are you using?
4. Post your REBUILDER.INI file. The one in the zip in the first post is empty -- and it surely would be different now with all the reinstalling, etc...
5. Are you overclocking? Looking at your logs (probably from you old system) I see a lot of places where the first encode comes out with no M2V but the second attempt works. In that case, since the parameters passed are exactly the same, system stability is almost certainly the cause.

First many thanks to take time to help me, I really appreciate it. As for your questions:

1- I tried tens of disks. Today, I just installed the new DDR2 modules, the motherboard is on since a week. I'm trying my first disks since 3 days. As I saw same error, I changed the modules. Right now I'm running a batch job with many movies.
I attach the log as the first one is finished + my ini file

2- The error is, for this first movie:
- Creating M2V for VTS_01 segment 50
-- V01005000025001 empty .M2V, retrying.
- Creating M2V for VTS_01 segment 50
-- V01005000025001 empty .M2V, retrying.
- Creating M2V for VTS_01 segment 50
-- Zero length .M2V file for V01005000025001.

Note that in the log I attach below, all encodes are for the same movie rip.
The first ones are with new MB, old DDR2 modules. The last one is with the new DDR2 modules.

All errors occur in different segments, so not a movie decrypting problem.

Most times it passes after some retries,. Sometimes, like my biggest deception (after having bought the new DDR2 modules), it fails with a zero length segment. My powersupply is rather young (1 year, an Enermax 485W Noisetaker - EG495AX-W)

[18:06:05] Phase III, REBUILD completed in 22 minutes.

Done.
[18:06:05] PREPARE/ENCODE/REBUILD completed in 214 min.

3- I use DVD-RB Pro (with my own official retail licence) v1.10.2 + CCE SP v2.70.02.10

4- I attach it here the rebuilder.ini

5- No, I never overclocked my system at all, despite my good MB, I prefere stability, I don't game

Sad that I changed my MB (for these scratches I made and I supposed to be the cause). I don't regret the DDR2 modules investment though.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks again

Finally, I monitor my CPU/MB temperature with ASUS software: 54/42 °C respectively. Not bad for a P4 650 CPU, maybe rather high for the MB, but in these days, weather is some hot. And in any case, the problem occured also before the hot weather
Disk drives look healthy with HD Monitor tool. As said before, I tried to backup/read/work from different drives

Have you tried an other encoders? It could be you have a bad copy of CCE...

Well,
I didn't temper with the encoder exe, of course. I won't ask for support if it was the case.

I restored my system at a point where only my hardware drivers are installed. I uninstalled my QuickCam Pro 5000 as it was causing some errors on boot with alcohol (which lead me to remove alcohol soft) and since it was my last hardware addin. I uninstalled the only other installed software on that old backup: PowerIso (as it adds system drivers, and since it is a new installed application)

So, it was a clean system, with no applications, and only my usual USB devices.

I tried your suggestion and changed codec: CCE Basic Retail with my personal licence. I could encode 5 movies over the night, no problem. I hate Basic, because of the support for only one pass (2 passes in Rebuilder).

This morning, I didn't reboot and I reinstalled CCE SP trial, last build (v1 not the new v2). Same ini file, I only enabled menu encoding. The first movie, which never passed, was done perfect. Now, I will let it finish the 4 other movies in the batch and see.

By the way, I also unplugged my LAN cable, so I can avoid any eventual pirates attacks causing the crashes.

If every thing is ok, I will restore my last backup, uninstall only the camera, keep the LAN and all other applications, and launch another encode. Maybe it is the camera drivers, as I know they were causing serious hardware issues...

If my actual session doesn't complete the encode, I will try to change disk cables, CPU, and finally my hairs...

Encode finished smooth for two other movies.
I resored my current system backup, uninstalled only the QuickCam Pro 5000, and let all the rest (LAN/PowerISO)
Encoded overnight 3 movies, no problems

I will post later the following:
1-encode with camera unplugged, but drivers installed (if stable, I can plug my camera when needed, reboot when finished using it)

2- Encode camera plugged/drivers loaded (setup that I suspect to cause the issue)

3- Let they system run overnight/longer with camera plugged, but no encoding

At the end I should know if it is a system camera issue or a DVD-RB / CCE SP camera issue

25th July 2006, 00:55
Hmmm.... I can't see how it could possibly be a DVD-RB or CCE problem since they do nothing at all with the camera or its drivers. Sounds more like a camera and how it interfaces (or more accurately "fails to inteface") with the operating system problem.

Excuse my posts and reposts...
I'm really proceeding with a step by step to debug this error.
Well, looks like the problem is too random

It happened now even without the camera. So, it is not really faulty. I uninstalled the KIS v6, Unplugged the LAN, overclocked my P4 650 3.4Ghz to 3.9Ghz (stable) to rule out partially powersupply first failure symptoms, and encoded successfully 3 times on a batch the same movie usually hanging.

I proceed a step by step again. I restored an intermediate backup: everything installed except KIS v6 (never installed for that backup). I test again at normal CPU clock speed (as I normally don't overclock). I will also test in afternoon, at peak heat temperature to see if it changes (power supply drainage decreases with heat, for any type of PSU). If random errors looks to be the most obvious, I will install a new Antec True Power 500W PSU I have on a spare PC, and test again.

I will post back when I finish it all so I don't keep posting "too much contradictions".

Well, I solved it, it is really a Kaspersky issue
If I remember my first issues, they begun with KAV v6 + ZoneAlarm Pro. I trashed ZAP, and the error stayed. Uninstalled KAV, same thing.
The fact is, that once it was installed, no matter that you uninstall it completely or shut it down. Something is tempered with and the system turns instable. When KAV or KIS v6 are running, my DVD-RB/CCE SP sessions won't work. I also enabled filtering by content to avoid scanning and locking m2v files, no sucess.

Restoring my system to a point where Kaspersky antivir was not installed, solves this issue. As soon as I install it, no more success in encoding. Looks like it is the antivirus part of the suite.

Reading in forums, it was recently revealed that Kaspersy Antivirus installs a rootkit like hidden file system to put securely its applications checksums. Many users reported disk access errors with some applications and system unstability once KAV is installed. We all know, that rootkits install deep in the system and are so very hard to uninstall, even with KAV. Rootkits, because of their nature, alter deeply the system, and can cause many instabilities.

In my case, 2 different symptoms:
- random disk access errors for DVD-RB / CCE-SP
- Memory errors on the long run of the system

Every thing solved once you just avoid it

Well, I won't ask you to debug this issue with KAV, as I prefere deleting such a software altering the system.

I will get my self three new movies tomorrow to backup. And give a last confirmation.

Also, if anyone is running Kaspersky Antivirus or Internet Security Suite v6 with succss when encoding (please check your logs before), post here for feedback. Maybe, things can differe depending on system hardware/software installed

Many thanks for your support. I'm posting it more technically at Kaspersky support forum

A last post
Installed F-Secure Internet Security 2006 to give it a trial, and no problem encoding

I'm discussing it on Kaspersky Forum

Feel free to post your expierience with KAV/KIS + DVD-RB

I just want to confirm the problems with Kaspersky AV.
I was wondering all the time why DVD-RB produces these errors. Reinstalls didn't help.
Then i found this thread and closed Kaspersky. Now everything works fine again.

Just to restate (in case anyone is just "skimming through") -- the problem is on Kaspersky's end, not DVD-RB. It sounds serious too.

I have used Kapersky antivirus(old to latest version) for years without any problem with DVDRB.!!!
The probllem are your duplicated .dll that have caused CCE to crash. I've experienced this problem before and helped people having this problem to "fix " it

jdobbs

What duplicated .dll? -- and if they were causing CCE to crash, why is it it only happens with Kaspersky enabled?

What's the solution?

1- I agree it is KAV/KIS problem, I'm discussing it on KAV forum, but not much help for now
2- @rocky.. In a forum, we usually look for help. So, it is of few interest to post affirmations without solutions. It would be kind if you detail more your affirmation
Thanks

Ok the problem is that when install software such as DVDplayer, webcam..even a new unicode font!!!. they also install msvcp, msvcr to your system 32 folder.
For ex, my DVDRB has been working fine until last night, I installed Theatertek dvd player that put MSVCR71 and MSVCP71 into system 32( i noticed this) so my DVDRB gave me emty m2v retrying.....I removed these both DLL and it worked again!!!
Go there look at these msvcp, msvcr ( 70 and 71) and you will be suprprised to see buch of them even including msvcp,msvcr(50,60). Just delete duplicated msvcr70 or 71 and msvcp70 or 71( delete msvcr and msvcp 50,60 first. if not work, proceed to delete mscvp and msvcr 70,71). Start you DVDRB again..voila..
I've myself got this problem a couple of time and so do my member in our forum have encountered this before. They repoted it worked.
I had searched many forums to get the working solution but none were working until I 've found out about it.
I've used kaperky antivirus and anti hacker for 5 years with out a single problem.
I hope this would help people in many forums who came across this problem. Ny the way thanks jdobbs for your great work and support.

So some misbehaving products are overwriting DLLs.... ok, that's probably a bad thing, but... why is it that the problem shows up only when Kapersky is installed? That still sounds like a Kapersky issue to me, almost as if the AV software is what is really being hosed by the DLLs rather than CCE -- the newly loaded DLLs don't seem to affect CCE's performance unless Kapersky is enabled.

rocky29
1st September 2006, 20:48
/I got kapersky uninstalled to install a new version or just install it on a freshly installed WinXP OS and they never gave me a single problem.
I currently run kapersky 24 hrs protection without any problem..I have showed the example that caused CCE to crash after Theatertek was just installed. I believe no one has found the answered for this problem in every videon forums I've been to....Usually the common answer are,, CPU overclocked,, AVsynth problem.. should reinstall CCE and DVDRB..etc.. None of them will work...
Some of folks in our forum got the same crap like this(even with DVDRB message ..AVI..something i did not remember )that drove them nut and they search everywhere on the internet including DVD RB site but
none of these suggested solutions would work!!!I've just help them by using this trick to get their DVDRB working again!!!!!!
Sorry, I could not anwers your technical question but I know this solution should work best!!
Why so many folks here using kapersky did not comnplain about this and even some of them did not have kapersky installed still have this problem?? just a question?? is that kapersky fault?? My buddies did not have kaperky installed but ask me for help and they got this problem resolved instantly!!
Who can explicitly explain why kapersky affect CCE perfomace technically??

jdobbs
1st September 2006, 21:02
CCE will definitely fail if a system is inappropriately overclocked. AVISYNTH failure might cause it too. Neither of those has anything to do with Kapersky and is a completely different matter.

This problem, the one we're talking about in this thread, however, appears to obviously be associated with Kapersky and Kapersky only.

By the way... I didn't write CCE so I have no vested interest in "who is at fault" here. In fact, it doesn't seem that any of the other four encoders supported by DVD-RB are affected at all. It just appears to me that in this case the fault is Kapersky. I'm just basing this on the fact that all jonny_ftm and ByteRipper did (in the posts above) was close Kapersky (without removing DLLs)... and it was fixed.

[Edit] I'd like to add, though, that your post is very much appreciated -- as it indicates that at least in some cases the loaded DLLs are the cause of problems. I'm wondering, if you disable Kapersky, does the existence of the new DLLs make a difference? It would be good to know if the DLLs are affecting Kapersky or CCE.

CPU overclocked is never been a problem and AVsynth is rarely the cause. The problem is neither DVDRB nor Kapersky.
I've used Kaspersky for 5 years without problem with DVDRB. from old to latest version. I can confirm that.
My friend who never have Kapersky installed came across this problem after installing some softwares that They reported it to me..Told them to get rid of these DLL. Worked like a charm again!!!
Kapersky running 24 hrs/day and DVDRB also worked fine . No problem until I installed the DVD plalyer software.Got rid of these dll, DVDRB worked fine again without touching Kapersky !!
All forums I 've been to before never gave me the the working fix ...
My CPU 805D (2.66GH) has been overcloked at 3.35GH at stock cooling.Another Barton Amd 2500 @ 3200+ with stock cooling. Never been a problem for years.

Many thanks for your suggestion
As soon as I'm home I'll look at these dlls
I will then try to reinstall latest KIS build, and make some encodes

I think what jdobbs wanted to say is: a bad overclocked system. So a stable overclocking is fine of course

I also confirm, that as KIS was removed, my problems were gone. As soon as I install, same errors. I have enough encodes now to say that no KIS, No empty .m2v errors

I of course never said that these messages are only caused by KIS. Probably they can appear under many circumstances like hard disk fails...

I will test it next days and report back

I said "...inappropriately overclocked" in my response. A search of this forum will find numerous instances of people who corrected this exact same problem by backing down on their overclocking. I'm sure the duplicate DLLs can cause a problem -- but that doesn't mean it is the only solution...

I must admit that I see in my system tons of msvcr/p files, most of different versions. Each program has its own files
Maybe, yes, many of same dll loaded could conflict, but, what to do?
In any case, trillian, remotelyanywhere... each is loaded and uses a different version of same msvcr70 for example

And, msvcp/cr files in system32 are used by system programs: explorer, spoolsv, iexplorer

So I won't delete it that way easily
Also, I can say it. No KAV/KIS, no problems = KAV/KIS issue

rocky29
7th September 2006, 20:08
You can delete these duplicated dll confidently without affecting other programs 's normal fuctions.hehe, No need to keep many duplicated dll to run all your applications.
When I've told people to delete the dulplicated dll, they are afraid of making these program malfunctional saying the same thing as you do..hehe but they eventually did it to get DVDRB running again!!! They were supprised why i knew there were ton of duplicated dll in there!!!!
Why many people who did not install Kaspersky still have the same problem as yours??
Leave your kaspersky alone and delete bunch all of duplicated dll . You will be fine...
I've brought it up from my own experiences after consulting to an IT expert to help out friends, members in our forum after they had searched everywhere( no real working solution) to solve this problem. They all are happy!!
Believe it or not, it's your choice

jonny_ftm

Could you tell me what dlls should I delete, those in applications folders, or those in system32?
I would say, in applications folder, so when they are launched, they don't find needed dll, and most often they will look in system folders.
I try to precise before doing so, as it take some hours to backup system, install KIS, update it, then test for hours some encodes...

Thank you for your help

I have been running Kaspersky AV for about 9 months and have not had a single problem running DVD-RB with CCE 2.67 or 2.70. Apparently, however, Kaspersky gave me a false positive on the avisynth exe file when I was installing DVD-RB Pro 1.10.7. I try to keep my video encoding computer as free of excess programs and files (e.g. codecs) as possible, but I have had Kaspersky scanning for viruses while encoding with CCE 2.70 and I was getting speeds between 3.0 and 4.0 on my P4 3.2 gig computer with 1.5 gb pc333 memory. So I'm not complaining.

jonny_ftm

Well, I gave a try to the new v6.0.303 Hotfix e
Still same problem, as soon as KIS is installed.
But, there's a fix:
Adding rebuilder.exe and ccesp executable to trusted zone
Adding the working folder and its subfolders to trusted objects zone

With these two, now KIS and rebuilder live in peace

I have other KIS instabilities though, so I banned it from my PC, forever

For people having my issue, use my method, much safer than deleting some system vital dlls
