View Full Version : XviD (Or Mpeg 4 ASP in general) and DXVA?

I tried playing a 1440x1080i XviD movie on my computer today. Despite that I think my CPU isnt too slow (A Pentium M 1.7GHz...), the movie cannot be play smoothly. And because this computer have a not-so-out-dated display card (A Radeon Mobility X series)
. I think I may be able to utitlize the card to help the CPU a bit.

(2003), at that time we didnt have DXVA on XviD clip, fast farward three years, now in 2006...

Do we have that? (Maybe someone already have added that feature in the XviD decoder, but I truely dont know) If not, why we still dont have that DXVA thingy? (Even the somewhat commercial DivX dont have that...)

Search more on DXVA in this forum. As far as I know, the codec has to be written specifically for the DXVA architecture, and also DXVA isn't really useable until DXVA 2.0 becomes standard in Vista.

If you're looking for a decent codec to play the movie good, you can't go more wrong than ffdshow. This doesn't have DXVA acceleration but has one of the best MPEG-4 ASP decoders around.

VLC Media player is also very fast with it's own decoders(even faster than ffdshow), but I doubt it will play such a file on your hardware smoothly.

Until DXVA arrives, Windows is still one of the modern OS were the GPU is strangely almost not used when you play a video.

That's not the case on Mac OS X...

:eek: I tried the infamous Mplayer for Windows...and my computer can play it smoothly...:eek:

Mplayer can do maricles:eek:

(Video lan can also play it smoothly....)

O... I think I shoud stop using Media player classic....:sly:

Just stop using Xvid Decoder and use ffdshow. A 1080i MPEG4 ASP encode should work properly without problems on a Pentium M 1.7 Ghz, and also don't use VMR9 but use VMR7 windowed that makes use of hardware overlays.

vcl, mplayer and ffdshow all use the same decoder so they should give (nearly) the same speed.
