View Full Version : Dropped frames when encoding in Encore

When I'm encoding my content in Adobe Encore DVD 1.0 I'm getting dropped frames.
I use iuVCR to capture and VirtualDub to edit and then I use Encore to build the DVD with the edited AVI's.
Both the original captured content and the edited content are fine, no dropped frames there. On the mpeg files that Encore have transcoded I have a dropped frame here and there.
It's not the end of the world but it would be nice to get rid of it anyway...
What can I do to fix this?
Why am I getting the occasional dropped frame?
I always thought dropping frames was a capture issue...apparently I was wrong.

is this happening when you play the disc back on a standalone, or when you play it on the computer?
it's possible encore is giving you buffer underflows, which will usually cause the player to stutter and/or drop frames. check your max bitrate as well - it shouldn't be too high for your media. DVD can take 10080 kbps max for all streams together, but it certainly can't sustain it for longer than an instant. you'll want your video max to be around 8500-9000 kbps, depending on how much audio you have (go even lower for LPCM audio).
if that's not the problem, it's possible that encore just sucks :)

It happens on both the standalone and when I play it back on the computer. In VirtualDub I step frame by frame and only on the encoded mpeg stream I had a dropped frame, the original capture and the edited AVI was perfect.
The bitrate for the project is somewhere around 4000-5000 kbps I would assume and the length of the material is about 1 hour and 50 minutes so this seems to not be the issue, right?
Just for test I encoded it again and set the framerate to be excactly 25 fps in VirtualDub, instead of the 24.997 I almost always have on my edited captures. I knew this would make the audio go slightly out of sync, and it did, but there were no dropped frame on the same spot as before.
Can this be the problem? The fact that I don't have excactly 25 fps on my edited captures and why am I always having that (24.997 fps)?
If so, how do I get the exact 25 fps without losing audio/video sync?
The number of frames on the video is 34760 after edit.
When Encore is done transcoding the number of frames has increased to 34766 (6 more frames).
After encoding in the standalone MainConcept encoder the frame numbers are 34765 (5 more frames).
Is the encoder adding frames to keep audio/video sync?
Can I disable this function?
