I ripped the VOB file from my Jackie Chan DVD and converted it from VOB to AVI using Auto Gordian Knot.
My problem is the AVI has a codec problem. When I try to play the AVI file, it tries to get a codec, but can't find it, but it plays anyway. But I'm trying to use Windows Media Encoder to convert it from AVI to WMV so I can use the file in Windows Movie Maker.
Well Windows Media Encoder won't accept my AVI because it doesn't have the right codec.
Does anyone know what codec my AVI might be missing?
Or is there a way to convert my VOB file to WMV using Auto Gordian Knot?
Thanks.

You may have a conflicting codec pack. If you are able to encode the file, you obviously have what you need installed in order to view the file. If you have any codec packs, uninstall them and remove the individual codecs, then install only the Gordian Knot codec pack available on the main download page.
No, you can't encode to .WMV with AutoGK.

So remove all codecs and codec packs and then get the gordian knot codec pack?
Just video codecs or audio ones as well? And how do I tell the difference?
And how do I remove codecs again? I forgot.
Thanks.

The codec packs should either have an "Uninstall option either in their Start menu location or under Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Individual codecs can be removed if you right-click My Computer and select Manage, select Device Manager, expand "Sound, video and game controllers" and select Video codecs. Removing only the codec packs and installing the Gordian Knot one will more than likely solve your problem.

Remove even DivX? It said it's required by the system. If I remove it, my system might not work correctly.
And just remove ALL of the rest of them from the list? It won't cause any problems?

Did you start by removing only the codec packs and installing only the Gordian Knot codec pack?

Yeah I removed only the codec packs. I haven't installed the Gordian Knot pack yet because I didn't want to delete it when I delete the codecs from the list.
Should I go ahead and get the Gordian Knot pack and then delete all the codecs from the list?

Ok I did that and it worked. I love you.
Hopefully I won't have any problems converting it to WMV and using it in WMM.
Thanks a lot for your help.

One problem though. My old Windows Movie Maker projects won't open. They just try to keep loading but don't load anymore and just freeze.
And the one that does open, it has an error and has to close whenever I click on the timeline. I assume that has something to do with the codecs I deleted and/or just downloaded.
When I load a WMM project, a green arrow keeps flashing at the bottom right corner of my screen like the DivX symbol did before.
