Most of the stuff at http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/ is way over my head. But if I understand it:

4:3 DVDs are not 1.33:1 but actually 1.37:1
16:9 DVDs are not 1.78:1 but actually 1.82:1

So, for example, when encoding a 4:3 DVD to XviD, and assuming no cropping of the source, it is better to use a resolution of 640x464 instead of 640x480?

If the width of your DVD is 720 and follows ITU then yes. For ideal AR you'd have to resize to 640x468 and then crop to 640x464 for mod16.

Personally, I would rather have a slight error in the AR, rather than crop some of the picture, but I see what you're saying.
