Well I like to stir up trouble, and I'm going to ask. So how much does thr RIAA pay you guys to be so tight about any mention of downloads or basically any mention of internet usage and file alterations? I can see following the host country laws and regulations (I assume it's the United States) but it seems you guys go overboard. Sure you got to keep what's best for doom9 and the fourm, but it seems you have a hardcore comunist fist on many things such as Rule 6 or somthing like that for many activitys that are infact not illegal. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a fourm closed especially for "Rule 6" when there has been no harm done, ilegal activity or corruptness in any chosen country in the world. I simply think that you guys go above and beyond. In a way to some organizations like the RIAA who would love more power and control (figurable to the restricions in this fourm) but are not granted by the goverment in real life. Even when it seems like there should be no problem discussing an issue. For example sombody should be able to come here say "I have downloaded a music video and would like to burn it or rip the song from it." and not have a problem, we shouldn't assume that it came from the internet and it must be bad, he dosn't have rights to it. I don't think it's our place to judge him based on that one statment. I vary well may be a freely distributed video from some basment/garage band or maybe a pirated music video off MTV. However it should matter we don't know and by as long as we do not commit an offense such as trading a illegal music video then is no real problem. Even a thread I had seen earlier about a individual wanting to resume a download (download not mentioned in thread) should not have a problem. P2P program itself is not iligal and definatly advice to use it wouldn't. download content is his business. I just don't see the reason to create the extra hassle and the extra rules for this fourm?

Why would we want to help people do something illegal? I'm sure if they could prove they legally obtained the file people would be happy to help.

I'm not saying that I want to help people do illegal things I'm saying that I don't care what other people do, that's there business and their consequences to be dealt with by other people (proper authority.) However issue that are not illegal shouldn't matter. I also believe in the information is not the enemy, information should be free, and it's how people use that information that should be looked at. Meaning it's the person who uses that information in the wrong way that should be punished. However everybody should have access to that information.

Well, unfortunately, the law does not agree with you (or I) - helping people to pirate media is illegal. This argument is less about our beliefs and more about doom9's moral beliefs. If he does not want his forum to be used for explicitly helping people to pirate, that's his choice and there's naught you can do about it.

Off topic reply: transcoding is converting from one format to another, which is technically every sort of encoding, but usually used to specify from one non-original format to another (in my case, computer files to smaller files either for my PocketPC or fun :P)

The RIAA doesn't pay any of the moderating team here to be "tight" as you put it. I don't think anybody from the RIAA is a member here, but I may be wrong on that. However, read the rules and the threads stickied in this subforum, and we don't tolerate people that want help on pirated files (this includes borrowed DVDs and downloaded rips). For legitimate content, provide a link to the file and we'll try to help, but that's as far as it goes. We steer away from illegal content for obvious reasons, and that's why Rule 6 is so rigorously enforced.

@Drifterz, If I was the RIAA/MPAA chairman, this is the forum I would try and shut down first because I would think that the "technology" with which the whole movie/music piracy/warez is driven seems to "originate" from here (where would movie warez be without XviD or where would music warez be without mp3 eh?). Since I am not, I think in a totally different manner. But this would have given you an idea of what the powers that be would like to do if they had the reason. The reason would be that the users here are helping each other with solving issues with downloaded/rented material and thus aiding copyright violations. So we try our best not to give them a weapon which they can use against us. We don't care what you do outside of this forum, but inside here rule #6 goes. Got it?
