Right... having a major probelm here! Everytime I run DVD-RB Pro with my BENQ DW1640 installed I get an IRQL NOT EQUAL OR LESS BSOD!!
After a process of elimination, testing and retesting (the DW1640 has known problems with IDE controller drivers) I have come to the conclusion that the problem is only between these two!
I can play games with no problems, burn disks with no problems, play DVDs no problem... try and run DVD-RB Pro.. BSOD! After uninstalling the BenQ and unpluging from the mainboard, DVD-RB Pro runs through no problem! Any comments Jdobbs?
Anyone else here got a Benq DW1640 and are running DVD-RB Pro successfully?

@ Rahzel: Which version of DVD-RB Pro are you using? Which drivers are you using for the DW1640? Which IDE controller are you using (standard PCI or Intel/Nvidia/ etc.)? Is the DW1640 slave or master?
Sorry for all the questions but really want to get to the bottom of this as it's driving me nuts!!

1.09.3.
by drivers, you mean firmware? (BSLB, best firmware IMO)
standard IDE drivers. some people have reported having issues with Nvidia's nforce IDE drivers, and there is no benefit to using Nvidia's.
my DW1640 is set to secondary master (DW1650 primary master).

So you've got the two DW drives on seperate IDE ports, with hard drives as the slaves I presume?
I am wondering whether it is because I have a SONY DVD-ROM and the BENQ on the secondary port with my HD on the Primary. Maybe I should try uninstalling the SONY and see if DVD-RB works then? If it does, maybe the conflict is between the two DVD drives rather than the program...

i have my DW1650 as primary master, DW1640 as secondary master, and i also have an LG DVD-ROM as my secondary slave (on the same IDE cable as my DW1640).
my Harddrive is a SATA drive, so all my IDE ports are open for my DVD drives.

After a little digging, there could be a problem with Benq and SONY drives on the same IDE... Will check it out tonight. Will first try uninstalling sony drive and see if DVD-RB runs, if yes will try swapping sony drive to the primary slave.
Rahzel: Thanks for the insight.. it is helping me narrow down possible solutions!! Will let you know how it goes!
Anyone who has any other suggestions are still welcome to post!!

DVD-RB does not directly access the DVD Burner in any way. The only time it ever even references it would be to read it via the operating system if you have it as the source (using AnyDVD, for example) -- so saying there is an incompatibility between DVD-RB and your drive is pretty much an impossibility. If you are having a problem it would have to be between your drive and Windows...

You should go into your control panel - administrative tools - event viewer - system. The event ID might help pinpoint the source of the problem.

I've had something very similiar, it turned out I had an old 40-way IDE cable instead of an 80-way IDE cable on a hard drive
But, then again reading says something similiar relating to IDE cables, hence my problem with cables and earthing
Try changing that cable that could be causing the problem with a brand new one, or even weirder, try swapping the order of your drives
So what is currently the master make the slave and whats the current slave make the master and try again. It can solve problems like that
I have multiple hard drives and getting them to work with each other took some fiddling around to convince them to work with each other as they are different makes. All less than 2 years old and my latest motherboard and CPU is less than 3 months old
Similiar situation, swapping slave and master jumpers and different hard drives on different cables

I'm also running a 1640 without any issues. It's master on Second IDE a Toshiba DVD-ROM is slave. Using Nvidia IDE drivers on a Nforce2 board.
Also, when are you getting the BSOD. Immediately on DVD-RB startup, during DVD-RB's Prepare or Rebuild, or when the Encoder is working? I'm just curious.

Right.
Installed latest version of DVD-RB? Check.
Check Drive order? Sony: Master /BenQ: slave
First test: Swapped Drive order: BSOD.
It seems to BSOD on the rebuild phase, it prepares and encodes ok, but when it starts to rebuild it throws its toys out the pram!! I am certain there is a conflict between the Drive and something, I am just trying to detemine what!
My next phase of deduction is to remove the Sony drive and try it with just the BenQ on the Secondary IDE. (remember: I know that when I disconnect the BenQ, DVD RB runs fine)
@ wmansir: I believe the problem may be between Sony drives and BenQ drives, as I have read elsewhere of people not having problems with the BenQ and Toshiba etc. but others have had conflicts between Sony drives and BenQ.
Appreciate all your input guys... If you think of anything no matter how trivial, mention it.

i am using my benq 1640 as slave in conjunction with a lite-on sohc-5232k as master and a 80-pin cable -- no problem.
i even had to install nVidia's IDE drivers to make RAID-1 work. i did notice, though, that mediashield would corrupt my harddrives, and therefore, i just deactivated it under "MSCONFIG". but that's a different story since you don't even have their drivers installed.

Same here except that secondary slave is empty. :)

Update: Removed Sony drive and DVD-RB Pro runs fine, so the conflict is between the two drives!!
Will try putting the Sony on as slave to my HD (any problems with doing this?)

Update: tried running DVD RB pro again with the sony removed and I got the IRQL again, so it appears that the assumption it was a conflict between the two drives is incorrect!!
Next step is to remove the DW1640 and run DVD-RB without any optical drives installed... I want to rule out the original thought I had that it was a new SATA drive that was causing problems...

I've built several systems and on-the-side run CPU-intensive programs like encoders or Folding@Home. There are three things that leapt to my mind: memory, power supply, and heat.
Encoding a movie is a CPU/memory intensive process. Memory errors can cause the BSOD you described. You can check your memory using memtest: www.memtest86.com
Many computer manufacturers include a temperature monitoring software package so you can see what temperature the CPU while it is working. Depending on the CPU you may be maxing out on temperature... blowing the dust out of the heatsink fins can solve a world of problems (do not allow the fan to spin from the flow of air if you do this.)
Today's modern processors require a good clean power supply or they can fail. The un-sexiest of the computer parts to be sure. I would say as a rule of thumb that a power supply should be 400 Watts. However this varies quite a bit, and some lower-wattage units can out-perform some higher wattage units. Enermax makes a good power supply, and there are many others.
Stress-testing with prime95 can also show whether or not your system is caving in under stress. Google for that one if you choose to test the stability of your system.
HTH and good luck!
