DVDDecrypter, DVD+VR and Closed Caption?

Hello,

Can someone help me? Sorry for the long post, but I want to make sure I give as much info as possible.

I have the Lite-On LVW-5115GHC+ recorder. I recorded a 1 hour 50 minute show from TV onto a blank DVD+RW using SP mode (2 hours max recording). I can watch the recording just fine on the Lite-On as well as on another stand alone Sony player. Now I want to transfer it to a regular DVD-R or +R.

First, I tried the basic "Windows file copy" to copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD onto my HD. I saw the VIDEO_RM but I ignored it (should I not have?) The problem is the resulting files on the HD is a lot larger than the DVD-R can handle. Now I could have used DVDShrink to compress it but I see no point in that. It should be around 4 gig and fit a DVD-R easily.

Next, I tried to use DVD Decrypter with IFO mode to rip the disc. That's when I see strange things.

First thing I noticed is VTS_01 shows up on Input.
Under that, I see
PGC 1 (01:50:01)
PGC 2 (00:00:01)
PGC 3 (01:50:01)
PGC 4 (00:00:01)

Upon clicking on PGC 1 or 3, I see Chapter 1 through 23.

How is it possible for me to see PGC 1 and PGC 3 on this disc. Together they would be close to 4 hours long! I know for a fact that there is only one recorded program and it's 1 hour and 50 minutes long.

Anyway, I selected PGC 1 and ripped it to HD. I made a quick ISO, mount it and burn it using Nero. Alas, I found out that closed captioning didn't make it over to the DVD-R. In our home, CC is a necessity because I have hard of hearing parents.

My question is this:

Is there a way for me to convert DVD+VR with Closed Captions to a regular DVD-R or +R using DVD Decrypter or another tool?

I really appreciate any pointers or comments any of you smarties can throw my way!

Could you list the files that you copied? DVD-VR can have up to three copies of exactly the same data in three VTS's. The reason for this is that while there is only one large space for all recordings, recordings having different video attributes (notably resolution and mpeg-2/mpeg-1) must be in different VTS's. To accomplish this files are created in VTS_02 and VTS_03 that point to the files of VTS_01.

Well, it isn't that problem (duplicates). And you can safely ignore the VIDEO_RM folder, it contains data for the recorder and is usually specific to that brand.
The extra PGCs are copies of the first and play the same video. They are used to recover from editing. If you were to edit the recording, the first PGC would hold the edited version. PGC2 & 4 hold the unused space as a title.
From what I can see the files should fit on a DVD-R as they total less than 4.37GB. But you do need the VIDEO_TS.xxx files and VTS_01_0.BUP as they contain the menu and vital pointers to make the DVD functional.

You know what, you're probably right. I bet I copied the DVD to a non-empty temp directory on my HD! Too bad my puter is at home else I would know for sure.

Anyway, I am going to do another file copy here at work and report back.

Update: I was success in copying the DVD+RW to HD then use Nero to burn the DVD Video files to another DVD+R disc.

My problem now is I can't test this DVD until I get home :( I only have s/w players here at work and both (PowerDVD and Win Media Player) can't see the CC.

Well, I have good news and I have bad news :)

The good news is that the DVD-R copy works perfectly on the Lite-On player. I can turn on and off the CC.

The bad news is that the same DVD doesn't work on my Sony DVP-NC685V :(

The worse news is even with the original DVD+RW disc, CC doesn't show up on the Sony player either. That's the player that my parents have too :( I had thought that if I can't make my parents a DVD-R copy, I would just loan them the DVD+RW disc. I guess I can't even do that!!

May be I should approach this another way. Is there a way to convert the CC to subtitle? Preferably cheap and easy :)
