Hay all

I really don't know where this is and am having a hell of a time finding information. Does anybody else not get a majority of the information on this fourm. It makes me feel stupid everytime i come here and have to think. OUCH.

N E way i need some suggestions on how i can burn some Matroska files with extension .mkv onto a DVD playable on a standalone device.

I also have a few OGG files with extension .ogm and i know even less about these. Are they a part of the Matroska container or what? I'm wanting to do the same thing to these basically they have been on my hard drive long enough.

Finally I have a third set which is AVI container which shouldn't be a problem, however I kept the info file on these because it appears the video codec is XviD 1.1.0 Beta and the audio codec is Ogg Vorbis. This one even more tripy than the last two. Once again trying to do the same thing a burn them to DVD. I havn't tried to hard on this one because I have been looking into the first two the most help with them would be more apreciated.

I am wanting to make DVD's out of these series so I belive i need to convert them so I can use an Authoring program such as nero to make menu's. I would like to know the different methods to do this and any disadvantage/advantages to them. Thanks. Also I'm not too interested in using DVD Santa, I was hoping for a more advanced way that would give me control over language selections and subtitle selection.

Anyone willing to help me or point me to the right direction (even a fourum I missed when doing a search) would be a hero to me. Thanks.

These comments indicate that you are working with downloaded material, such as is usually obtained via P2P or torrents. You may want to re-read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) to which you agreed when you signed up to this forum, particularly #6. Not true, an asumption that you have made not based on any real fact. I had not said this was downloaded content and and had only listed file types with an inquiry of methods to covert them.

Did read, not much of a relative point here. Now if I had said "Ya just downloaded this new movie off TorrentSpy how do i burn it?" I could see the point.

In case you didn't notice that was a three part question and just for arguing sake i'll give you the part about having an info file, as I mentioned that was some what of a addon question somewhat related that was the least important. For the comment of wanting to make a authoring a DVD (the whole reason i want to convert to another file type), well ??? what is your point on that? You never have had limited hard drive space and don't want some movie that could be burned off of it? Well I simply prefer to put all video files to a DVD format so that they can be played on standalone device such as... wait for it... a DVD player. Most people, at least that I know, have better televisions that computer monitors or our at least bigger. That way whenever I wanted to watch these shows again I don't have to sit at my computer or even need to have a computer available to watch.

I still need assistance and any help would be greatly appreciated on this topic of converting file types. If I sounded rude, frustrated or angry well sorry that's because I am. That is because even if I had said I had ilegally downloaded a bunch of movies from the internet the information I was asking for is not illegal on anyones part. The information dosn't change no matter what were talking about or the material source. Source from internet and source from home media may be a topic/issue but simple file conversion isn't and is not breaking any laws. I live in Canada, I don't know where you are all from but on this matter it's the same through North America at least. Law aside I understand your fourm rules keeping personal opinions out, but I feel I havn't broke any fourm rules. Finally anyone helping me could not know where content had came from when assisting another and could not be doing anything wrong without making a rash judment.

Finally it's not like file conversion is the well guarded, underground, illegal activity, that is itself pirating (the big issue here.) There is lots of information posted all over the internet, and yes I have been researching it myself. I simply wanted to post a fourm to help get a understanding on the massive amount of information on this topic and others opinions (not acusations.) I am still asking for others interest in this as mentioned earlier even links to already existing threads, that I am sure are there just hard to find. Thxs alot and sorry for the rambling/venting.

Okay I have read that entire post. It seamed to be more of a battle than anything else and is now locked. I do see the post from doom there but I don't get your point. Also I do see I'm not alone and there are others that don't see your same view the situation. If it make you beter my new question is I don't have any files but I would like to know how to change those file extenstions.

Any other willing to help? Thxs in advance all.

how to change the file extension?
Easy: <F2> in Windows Explorer and type the new extension ;)

Seriously, for conversion, if your mpeg-2 encoder doesn't accept the file types: *IF* the streams inside the mkv/ogm files are acceptable in AVI you may just use direct stream copy in virtual dub mod, as the encoder probably eats AVIs, else you can use an avisynth script with only DirectShowSource("moo.mkv") if your mpeg-2 encoder accepts avisynth input. Else you might have to dig deeper in the advanced container and/or mpeg-2 forums..
