29.97fps WMV to 25fps AVI (Divx)

I have a wmv movie trailer file having a frame rate of 29.97p. I would like to encode it to an AVI file (using divx codec) having frame rate of 25 (progressive) keeping the audio sync with video. I tried to do it using Canopus procoder 2.04 but the file was a minutely jerky.What should i do to proceed in order to create an avi from it, without any jerky motions ? Guys if are going to tell me some AVIsynth algorithm, then pls tell me in details as I am not very much familiar with avisynth.

29.97 fps is NTSC video. If the video was created by Telecining 24fps film (35mm or 16mm) to NTSC video, a process called Inverse Telecine (IVTC) can be used to restore the progressive frames -- but the new framerate from IVTC is 23.976, not 25.

I'm going to suggest you look to see if your current encoding tools you're familiar with -- Canopus or other tools -- can perform IVTC processing.

Yes, of course this can be done with AviSynth filters, in particular the suite called "DeComb." But you may be happier using your current toolset than learning to use a new one.

Well one thing I am sure of is that the wmv file is not created using IVTC cos the avi that created using ivtc filter in TMPGEnc 3.0 xpress was a bit jerky. So if u hav any other ideas then pls share it with me. Anyway thanx for giving me ur advice!

Can you make a short sample (1-2 secs) of the .wmv source available for examination? If so, pick a scene with motion.

Hey I have figured it out. It was a telecined video. Actually it was showing 29.97 in the frame rate box but when I clicked on the Find button in TMPGenc 3.0 Xpress, then it gave me 3 frame rate values:

Max - 24fps
Avg - 23.952fps
Min - 14fps

So this shows that the wmv file was telecined. Anyway thanx for looking into my problem. I really appreciated it.

I'm having a similar problem. I've got 26 AVI files (AVI container, WMV3/WMV9 video codec and AAC audio codec).

mplayer reports that the video settings are:

VIDEO: [WMV3] 704x396 24bpp 23.976 fps 1174.3 kbps (143.4 kbyte/s)

I tried to convert this file format to MPEG-2 PAL DVD with TMPGEnc 2.5 (free edition). Unfortunately the result is jerky during fast motion scenes.

On my computer TFT monitor it doesn't show that much, but when played on my TV (i've got a dvd player that plays MPEG/AVI/DivX/Xvid) its then VERY obvious and annoying.

Any help would be much appriciated.

U should try Canopus Procoder 2. It would effectively encode the files without introducing any jerky motions. Trust me. It worked for me. Or u can try to tick the ' Do not rate frame conversion' feature in TMPGEnc 2.5 Plus located in the Advanced setting. For audio conversion, try Besweet. If u still can figure it out, then u can email me at vrnbali@yahoo.co.in & I can give u the entire tutorials that can help u in encoding such type of files. Gud luck!

the "do not rate frame conversion" doesn't sound like a good idea because my source is 23.976 fps and the DVD PAL MPEG-2 video required 25 fps.

i also have TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress 3.0.4.24 (the pro version of the above free encoder) and its doing the same :(

Hey u dont need to look for some other software to produce the output without jerkiness. U did try it with TMPGEnc 2.5 plus & u got the output as u wanted, so wats troubling u now ?

varunb, i wanted to test the commercial version which offers a bunch of extra features and see if it could properly do the conversion. Apparently it doesn't.

neuron2, i downloaded DGPulldown and it generated a much better MPEG file. At least it doesn't jerk on the PC, but i haven't tested it yet on the TV.
