Hi I'm trying to decide what Matrix to use for different Type of movies in DVD-RB, using CCE 2.70.02.06.
after using RME in DVD-RB I got more confused since the movie I'm trying to backup is old, bitrate between 4000-5000
and compression 73%. I tried different Matrix but couldnt decide finally I tried High_low Matrix, and picture on some sence was blocky.
Finally I decided to Maybi let the CCE do it for me, by using CCEAQM=1.
I read all the warning about it, I know I should use 3 passes with CCE, I have new dvd Pioneer 383-s. I wanted to know ..
1. is that safe how many people complained of streaming problem when using CCEAQM=1 ??
2. How to know which Matrix should fit A movie or any Movie for that matter, Like "Rio Bravo" DVD I described before ??

Hi Elad,
I'm the coder of AQ3. I do onepass encodes using my program and CCE 2.70. AQM is always enabled during my encodes. I never had problems with that. Also I'm using DVDPlanner Pro which is supported by my GUI. Maybe it is a problem with DVDRB ... who knows.
What matrix for what movie? I'm using AVAMAT6 (my own) or the original matrix of the movie. Use Rebuilder's Matrix Editor 0.2.0.8 (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=103) for doing that.

I'm afraid one-pass encoding doesn't use CCEAQM (or I have failed to test it correctly).
In addition to the available bitrate, I tend to look a bit at the compressibility of the movie before deciding what matrix I use. Your Rio Bravo's AR is probably 1.85:1 so it'll fill the whole frame and it's also quite grainy (at least the one I've seen is). That means it doesn't necessarily compress well. However, the movie also has some dark scenes which don't require much bits.
I'd use the CCE standard matrix (I think it's the medium-medium one) with adaptive quant matrix enabled. I'm quite sure most of the time the encoder uses a matrix that is the CCE standard with all values halved which will retain details nicely. Use 3 or 4 passes. In fact, I use these settings probably 95% of the time these days - in other cases I usually use a matrix that is CCE standard * 3/4.

Hi Boulder, 10x very much your tip helped me a lot to decide how to choose Matrix and I will try to do CCEAQM=1 and using the CCE default Matrix (it is the medium-medium).
I couldn't undersyand though what did you mean by CCE standard * 3/4,

used ur AVAMAT6 , I tried it first on RME with CCE, The result were awesome in manner of Deblocking, compare to other matrixes I tried , I didn't have time to Check the full DVD backup yet, I'll get home I'll do it. there one thing I don't understand. by looking at your matrix, I see it's treshold is lower the CCE Medium-Medium, Meaning it compress little less better and preserve more details probably ?.
so how come the result were beter in manner of blocking??
second how do you know when the movie can spare bits for compressing and then you can use higher Matrixes and when it is not, the using Matrixes that compress better?

A fast action movie with lots of bright flashes etc. will need much more bits for the same quality than a movie with less motion. An AR 2.35:1 movie usually needs less bits than a fullscreen one or a 1.85:1 one (because a 2.35:1 movie has some black borders that compress extremely well), unless there is lots of motion or something else that needs a lot of bits.
