1. About what percentage is the size of the Extras space reduced when Half-D1 is used?

2. What percentage is the Extras space reduced with "Half-D1 and Half Space"?

3. How would one estimate the size reduction using "Half-D1 and Half Space" plus some value of "Steal Space"?

1. No space is saved by using just "Half-D1" -- but it can make extras that are blocky (because they are being reduced too much) look a lot better. You can use "Half-D1" with "Steal Space From Extras" in order to recover space.

2. 50%. But if you use "Half/Half" along with other methods (like "Steal Space") it can be higher.

3. Here's an example. Let's assume that a standard reduction was 80% for the disc to fit on a DVD-5. Then the extras would also be reduced to 80% of original size. If, then, you also set "Half/Half" they would be made into Half-D1 (352 pixels wide) and be reduced to 40% of their original size (half of 80% is 40%). If you then added "Steal Space" at 25% you would get 30% (stealing a quarter of the 40% that was there before it is applied). All recovered space is applied to the main feature.

Thanks for that clarification about Half-D1, jdobbs.

I'm enjoying using your program. I just made a backup where I was able to keep the 5.1 soundtrack whereas with Shrink I had to drop the 5.1 to get as good a picture.

so, if I used Half-D1 on say the two disc version of Lord Of The Rings series (Special Editions Extended), then it actually doesn't cut the size in half

My idea of thinking is due to the sheer size of these when combined, no DVD authoring software will touch it as they all complain its over the 9.5GB size limit

All I want to do it try my ideas for myself, just to see what the result will be

I have tried DVD2One to join it both disc as one big movie, but it fails and moans its too big for DVD-DL, I know that already thats my whole point of trying to play around and see what I can do, just for the hell of it

Basically I'm trying to combine both DVDs into one movie, so I can pass it onto DVD-RB with Half-D1 to see what can be managed. Pushing things to their limit is what I want to see thats all

I've already saved over 20 minutes on each movie by cutting out the end credits and the beginning sequences that I usually chop off anyway from movies, I'm not interested in seeing what company released/paid for the movie, I want to watch the movie, and besides it gives that bit more bitrate back to DVD-RB to play with

for a free solution, try using DVD-Shrink in re-author mode. go to Edit|Preferences|Preferences tab (far left). There's a combobox that will allow you to select target size. Change it to Custom, then in the textbox just to the right, type in any huge number -- make it 20Gb if you want. Then in reauthor mode, drop your ripped VTS's in from each disc, in the proper order. Then backup your reauthored disc, and run it through DVD-RB. In other words, don't use Shrink to shrink, just to glue the pieces together without compression.

If you do all this preprocessing, jdobbs won't support any difficulties that you might have. However, I have done this a few times with double-sided discs, for instance, and I've not had any trouble.
