File size increase after saving. [Archive]

I'm very new to VirtualDub and am slowly understanding it's facilities and features. Last night I was playing around with different filters and seeing how it affected the video. I'm using a 1 gig AVI file on my hard disk that was captured from my DV camcorder. After applying a deinterlacing filter and a sharpening filter I saved the file (same AVI format) however the size of the file blew out to about 6 gig. Is that normal? If not how do I best manage it? Thanks.

Executive summary: You have to select a compression and appropriate bitrate under Video/Compression.
