Shrinking large movie files

Can anyone explain in easy speak how to reduce file sizes for movies e.g. from 1.7 GB to 600mb.Does the format matter and do you lose much quality.I mostly use div x xvid and avi

Wrong forum. Ask the moderator to move it to the Newbies forum. The DVD Burning forum is specifically for issues with DVD burners and burning software, not for encoding/transcoding.

You should look into an application called DVDShrink.
