Hi guys, i'm new to this so you might have to bare with me, About a month ago my pc had to be formated & has had windows xp service pack 2 put on it, since then i have reinstalled nero 7 premium & have had nothing but problems ever since. Every time i try to burn either a cd or dvd it takes around 2 - 3 hours, the ultrabuffer only gets up to 66% then down to 30% & keeps doing that all the way through the burn process, also if i'm on the internet it disconnects me & i get the message local connection unplugged. I've tried updating nero & a bug fix which i found on the pc world website. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.
Thanks. Mark.

Hi!Every time i try to burn either a cd or dvd it takes around 2 - 3 hoursAre you talking about the time taken ONLY to burn, or the total combined time of ripping/compressing/burning?

It's the time it takes to burn. Before i had service pack 2, i just had windows xp pro and it took about 3-4 mins for a dvd & 1-2 mins for a c.d.

I'd suggest you experiment by using a different burning program - Create an .ISO image file of a DVD and try burning using either DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn. If it requires a similar amount of time to burn, then you'll know the problem is not being caused by NERO...

Tried DVD Decrypter, MagicISO & Sonic they're all doing the same. I think it must be a bug in service pack 2 but i can't find any fixes for it.

Could it be the dreaded PIO mode problem for the drive? Right-click My Computer and select Manage, select Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and check each (primary and secondary) controller's properties under the Advanced Settings tab to see if any are in PIO mode.

1) You now know that NERO is NOT the cause of the problem.

2) Two to three hours to burn a CD (or even a DVD) appears to be TOO extreme to even be explained by PIO vs. DMA - unless, of course, "sixxdog" has overstated the actual time...

3) Based on the reference to Internet disconnects, I'd speculate that your system has contracted a virus or similar...

No, seriously it really is between 2 - 3 hours. I'm running avast anti virus & that hasn't detected any virus'. I also use Ad-Aware that hasn't detected anything either.

Have you, as suggested by "CWR03", checked to see if your drives are (as they should be) in DMA mode or (as they shouldn't be) in PIO mode?

Enter "pio mode" in quotation marks in search. Just read a little.

@sixxdog

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to DMA if available.
