You can simply load the video up in windows media encoder 9 (free download from the microsoft site) and encode that if you have the required codecs.

every encoder i've tried putting this into including the windows encoder it locks up the program and forces me to restart whatever one i'm using:(...not sure why...it's like 702mb file...not sure if that would make a difference

1) Does your .AVI PLAY properly?

2) What codecs (video and audio) did you use to create this .AVI? Do you still have them installed on your system?

it won't play in windows media player but it will play in vlc

i didn't create the avi...i'm looking to take the avi that i made with a dvd and convert it to a high quality wmv

"regsvr32.exe /u shmedia.dll" should solve the crashing problem. If it doesn't then "regsvr32.exe shmedia.dll" to set things back.

Really though it is an avi that you didn't create, but you made from a DVD?
