View Full Version : Booktype and replication

Hello,
I am mastering a DVD9. I have recently talked to the replication plant and they told me it is ok to send the master on a DVDDL disk (+R for sure).

This question may sound silly, but supposing I do that, would it reduce compatibility problems (if any) if I change booktype to dvdrom, or I am way off the point?

Another one, what method do you guys use to check thoroughly your masters before replicate?

@redguy

Coming from a guy who does close to 60 videography projects per year (some years are better than others ;) ) as a sideline job -- and roughly 80% wind up on DVD, I'm going to tell you that you're going to INCREASE compatibility by setting your booktype to DVD ROM. But that's assuming you handled your own burning/manufacturing duties. If all you're doing is mastering to a DL for the sake of the plant... well, they'd know their equipment better than anyone; I'd think you'd be safe either way.

The reason why I recommend the DVD ROM setting is because many legacy players (there are more of 'em out there than you may think!) simply won't recognise a disk that's formatted in a recordable format. But most studio DVD-Video disks are formatted as DVD ROM: Match that with the fact that the reflectivity of a +R disk matches the reflectivity of a studio dual layer... and you wind up with a +R that plays on whatever you put it in.

Good luck to you, whichever way you go!
