XviD to DivX

ime looking to re-encode an xvid/divx for use on a portable media player, its screen is only 4" LCD 480x272 pixels so i want to re-encode stuff to watch on it as i would assume file sizes would be alot smaller when going down to that res

what is the best way, virtualdub i am assuming, i also need to get the aspect ratio right, if i re-encode to 480x272 it obviousily wont look right

how would i go about doing that, gettin the AR right (calculating it) and settin that in vdub?

It is not yet clear that Robm2kx means XviD to XviD, DivX to XviD, or Xvid to Divx.

Rob, if you would be so kind to clarify what codec you want to use?

yeah i put in the post this might belong in the XviD forum, its XviD to DivX is what i am trying to do

and as a correction to neuron2, not the best way then, the only way? i know i can just set the avi compression and save as avi, so i guess i need to know how to get the AR right for the rez of the screen, where to set that, and will it make a big file size diffrance ?

You didn't tell us the resolution of your source video, so we can't tell you what operation to apply.

the source vairys but is usualy either

640x272
608x320

Do you want the result to be letterboxed (black bars at the top and bottom), or do you want to crop some visible content and avoid letterboxing?

i dont want to crop any of the avi, so i guess it will have to be letterboxed to keep the AR right

You can use the VirtualDub resize filter to do it. It's pretty easy; you'll be able to figure it out without hand-holding.

where is that in virtual dub, i ctrl+f and theres nothing in there.

if its going to ask for specific values how do i work out how to keep the AR correct at 480x272

Hit the "Add" button to add a filter. Then highlight the resize filter and hit OK.
(After the filter is added, if you need to reconfigure it, highlight it in the
filter list and hit Configure.)

For the case of 640x272 source -> 480x272 display:

New width 480
New height 204 (480/640 * 272)
Select precise bicubic in Filter mode

Check expand frame

Frame width 480
Frame height 272

For the case of 608x320 source -> 480x272 display:

New width 480
New height 252 (480/608 * 320)
Select precise bicubic in Filter mode

Check expand frame

Frame width 480
Frame height 272

You can see from these examples how to work things out for any source size.
