I intend to distribute surround-encoded videos on the Web using Quicktime. It appears that Quicktime does support 5.1 AAC; can anyone with experience confirm? Also, has anyone used DPLII or CSII with AAC? If so, what should I do to make sure that the surround information is not destroyed by compression?

QuickTime support 5.1 AAC encoding and is very good with resulting quality, my recommend to use real 5.1 if you want real surround.

For the free option, u can create MP4 files wich are supported by the Quicktime Player, then load into QT and saved them as .MOV. Itīs kinda hacky but it works. Donīt know any Quicktime format muxing app to get it done.
BTW, HD trailers from the Quicktime website have most of them 5.1 AAC audio. So u can be sure the QT player will support the audio stream.

Thank you both.
QuickTime support 5.1 AAC encoding and is very good with resulting quality, my recommend to use real 5.1 if you want real surround.
Then my next question is: What bit rates are we looking at, and what lowpass cutoff frequency should I use for the LFE channel?

Because apple encoder don't have HE-AAC profile only LC-AAC everything equivalent and above 192kbps will be good, and you don't need for cutoff but you can for example 13000Hz

Although it's possible to generate 6Ch AAC-LC "audio only" streams with say Nero or CT encoders, mux them into the MOV container and play them in QT7....
QT7 does not seem to like combined 6Ch AAC-LC audio with AVC video (created with other encoders) when muxed into the MOV container!
For some reason QT7 can't detect and play the audio stream... :(

Dont know if this will help, but i been using MPEG streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html)to produce mov files, a while ago i tried o convert some mpeg files and quicktimepro was asking to buy a plugin to read mpeg files.
I found this tool that is completly free (WIN/MAC versions available) that will let me convert to from almost any video/audio format to .MOV and it is faster than quicktimepro and you can use H264 to compress, all you need is the quicktimeplayer or the quicktime alternative
Hope this was what you were talking about, havent tried the audio options but ive senn the aac output option in it
