I have a 2nd computer that I've been using in my living room as a media computer for the past year or so. It is:
AMD Tbird 1.333 Ghz
Asus A7n8X-X motherboard
nforce 2 chipset
AC'97 onboard audio (stereo only)
1 gig PC2100 ram
Radeon 9600 Pro video card

Now, for that time, it has been working fine. However, about a week ago, I accidentally destroyed my processor in a tragic computer cleaning accident (some pins got bent and one fell off). So, in the interim between while I was waiting for new computer parts, I used my media computer for things, like essays and whatnot. After everything was all said and done, I returned my computer to my living room and decided to give it a nice clean wipe and reinstall windows.

Now, windows has been reinstalled FOUR times. Each time I install windows, I get the exact same error when I try to use FFDshow. Any program that uses FFDshow for audio decoding will seize up the player and make it freeze. FFDshow.ax is at fault. If I go into the audio configuration menu, it will freeze after about 10 seconds, max. Some more info:

I've used many different versions of the nforce audio drivers including the ones found on my CD, the most current drivers found on the ASUS website and on the nvidia website. I've had just the drivers and no software installed. I've also had realtek's drivers installed. All produce the same results.

I've tried about 5 different versions of FFDshow between november 2005 and May 06.

I've tried using FFDshow after the computer is FULLY updated through Service Pack 1a (on XP Pro) as well as before I install any updates.

I'm not overclocking, the FFDswow video portion is working just fine.

Dlls that appear to possibly be at fault are rundll.exe and kernel32.dll. I really am at a loss. I don't know what the problem could be. I'd appreciate any help that I can get.

Hi,

You can test the filters and do some changes with graphedit.

http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/graphedit.rar

With this utility you can render an audio file with uses ffdshow and change filters (or configure in site). I recommend to install Milan's ffdshow last daily build (2005-11-29) wich is very stable:

http://cutka.szm.sk/files/ffdshow-20051129.exe

Interesting utilities for managing directx filters:

good luck

Thanks. That version appears to run fine on my computer.

However, there's something else odd going on: Certain ffdshow.ax files don't want to register correctly on the media computer. 02262006 worked fine on my regular computer, but wouldn't install on my media computer. When I copied the contents of the FFDshow folder over to the other computer, I tried to manually register it (using regsvr32.exe) and it gave me an error telling me that it couldn't find specific libraries.

TBird cannot use SSE or SSE2. You have to make sure you use a build that doesn't require them. What player has been freezing on you?

Also right at the bottom of vm9's page you should find the runtime libs, however none of his builds are likely to run correctly on your tbird.

It has been freezing on all players (since FFDshow is producing the error and they all use it).

That being said, which FFDshow versions require SSE? I thought the options allowed for the use of SSE/2/3/MMX/etc only if the processor supported it (as in, none of the instructions would be used if the processor didn't support it). Also, why would certain FFDshow installation exes not work on this computer, but would work on other computers (or, in some cases, would work on the computer prior to reinstalling windows)?
