Hey !
i got this flick , its widescreen but i cant get the right aspect ratio ...it doesnt say anything about on the cover .. so is there some other way to check it ?

You could also try playing the DVD in a software media player, such as MediaPlayer Classic.
Then navigate to a nice light part of the movie, press pause, take an "un-corrected" Jpeg still image (via File -> Save Image...) and up-load it to the forum ;)
EDIT: NBA eh.... If it was for TV, it should either be 4:3 or 16:9 (1.77:1)

but i get so annoyed , because there are black borders on the bottom and at the top and it doesnt look 4:3 either ...

But in order to see what you are seeing, please play the DVD in a software media player and take either a full screen grab or follow the instructions I gave you to take "un-corrected" stills using Media Player Classic....

What you have sounds like a 4:3 letterboxed 1.78:1 video. You can simply remove the black bars with AviSynth:
MPEG2Source("nbadvd.d2v")
Crop(0,60,0,-60)
Lanczos4Resize(720,480)
But we can only be sure if you post a screenshot. :)

There does not appear to be anything special about your source.
It's 720x480 with 4:3 DAR signalling... complete with an 1.77:1 over-layed movie image at 361 pixels high...
Sure it would have made more sense if the source had been 720x480 with 16:9 DAR signalling with an over-layed image at 480 pixels high (aka: widescreen anamorphic) but these kind of DVD authoring decisions are out of our hands :eek:

The source will be interlaced, so you'll have to apply some form of de-interlacing.
That said, if you don't fancy the idea of resizing the image too much and want to generate a "square pixel" encode (as opposed to pixels with aspect ratio signalling), you could crop away the black mattes and try a resolution of 656x368.

As you can see, the image portion looks the correct shape.

In my opinion you confuse people when you use 4:3 and 16:9 to mean more than just the DAR. If you'd just say that the DAR is 4:3 and the video Aspect Ratio (or some such) is 1.78:1 (and NOT 16:9), then it may become more clear more quickly.

I will endevour to express the DVD source's DAR as being either 16:9 or 4:3. And the image portion (or movie aspect ratio) as an ratio, ie: 1.77:1, 1.85:1, 2.35:1 etc, etc for example...

I was feeling guilty later, SMD. Maybe I should have just suggested that you adjust your posts for your audience. You can talk DAR, SAR, PAR and all the other ARs to one crowd, but when trying to get across a somewhat difficult concept to someone encountering it for the first time, you really have to simplify. For a lot of people 4:3 is by definition fullscreen (as in 1.33:1 or 640x480) video, and, especially if you're European where you don't see it very often, the fact that 4:3 DARs can include widescreen movies comes as a bit of a surprise.

thx for the explanation guys, i got confused because of the resolution of 640x360 of the image(which i thought shoud've been 640x480) but now i see that when you apply the correction so the frame fits a 4:3 screen, it'll be properly displayed.
now how would this frame be displayed on a 16:9 screen?

If you are thinking of re-encoding to MPEG-4, the nearest mod-16 "square pixel" resolution you can get to a movie aspect ratio of 16:9 is 640x366.... Unless you re-size to a different width.
