Dual-Core supported codecs

Hey, I wasn't sure which forum to post in so I've posted in here. I'm about to start doing some video encoding to .avi, but since I have a dual core cpu I obviously want to make sure I encode using a codec which supports both cores. Which is the best codec to use for this? Also, is it just a simple process of updating the appropriate codec in Gordian Knot?

I see divx supports dual core cpu's, but I also heard divx doesn't give best results quality-wise. X264 won the summer shoot-out that was just held here so I was hoping to find that would support dual-core cpu's...sadly it does not appear to..

What is your best advice then?

You might want to read rule 12 and edit your post before some mod reads it :)

You've seen the shoot-out, it clearly says that x264 does support dual cores. Also divx (like you said), xvid (current development version), many codecs from Nero, probably wmv, etc etc.

What kind of encoding are you doing?

Lossless Capture - Lagarith

MPEG4 - Divx 6, Xvid (latest binaries), Nero codecs.

H264 - X264, Nero


For decoding:

H264 - CoreAVC (faster for me), VLC Player

Lagarith eh? Is there much difference between a movie encoded with that than one encoded with X264 in terms of quality or size? It's just that I've never heard of Lagarith before, every movie I come across tends to be encoded with Xvid or whatever. Is Lagarith better?

Lagarith is lossless, you would get huge filesizes.
