I just want a stand alone codec so that I can share some videos ive made with my friends. Ive heard 3ivx works, but isnt the free version only a trial ? (or does that not effect playback). Im looking for something less bulky then installing the K-Lite codec pack, or using VLC player.

Also, if I did ever use a free codecs like x264 and mux the AAC sound in, would I need a seperate codec for the audio ?.

Hi,

ffdShow will play both MPEG4 and AVC encoded movies using Nero Recode. :)

VLC comes with its own codecs so you can play the file without installing anything else.

You could also try ffdshow. There are recent builds at http://x264.nl

Thanks for the replies, I forget to mention ffdshow, im trying to avoid that as well (I want to make it as idiot proof as possible, like installing the DivX codec). Ive been messing about with Megui and finally got some suprisingly decent results with it. Couple of questions

1. How big is the trade off using Turbo when encoding ?
2. If my friends can just install x264 to videw the videos, what will they need to install to listen to the sound if I use AAC ?, or will I have to resort to using MP3 (which I really dont want to).

The CCCP includes ffdshow, haali media splitter, vsfilter (for subtitles), gabest MPV (for MPEG2) as well as two players: Media Player Classic and Zoom Player. It's all nicely packed up into a foolproof installer too :D

The turbo tradeoff is almost impossible to see, there should be no reason not to use it.
As for AAC audio, you will either need a standalone AAC decoder (such as coreaac) or ffdshow, which also handles AAC. Don't forget if the media file is a .mp4 or .mkv, you will probably need to include a media splitter for them too.
