I found Vongo.com and decided to give it a try. You sign up and then get to download movies to your PC or windows portable devices, and watch them whenever you want, as many times as you want and want, and as long as you want (although, it seems some might expire after a few months), for just $10/month (They do have some movies that are VOD. $3.99 for 24/hours). That blows away the rental store and makes Netflix look like a dumb idea. At least potentially.
The Vongo FAQ says, "Many of the Vongo titles are encoded at nearly DVD quality and are between 1 and 1.3 gigabytes in file size. Some titles are encoded a bit smaller with a file size of 500-700 megabytes." So far, most of the full-length movies I've downloaded are under 600MB. This results in VHS quality and so is a disappointment (but still very watchable).
Selection is good, hundreds (not thousands) of movies. Good enough to find lots of movies you'll want to watch. But, not good enough to cancel your membeship at the rental store.
I don't know if Vongo is deliberatly crippled with VHS quality to be less competative with DVDs or if it's crippled because of concerns for bandwidth and low-end PCs. But, the way for the MPAA to kill P2P is to take Vongo to the next step.
