I put a DV tape to a DVD disc on a JVC recorder. How do I convert the file from DVD format to avi for editing?

:(

u need software like dvd shrink to make a iso file.
then use fairuse wizzard 2 to make a DIVX or XVID(700meg)from your ISO file.

Copy the original DV tape with a 1394 'capture' card. You're wasting a lot of time and quality converting DV to MPEG2 (DVD) then back to DV avi.

Rip it, then use avisynth to frameserve into whatever you want.

I agree with communist. It would be better to just capture directly from the camera. But if the loss in quality from the conversion to DVD isn't enough for you to worry about, then just rip your dvd, then at least you won't have to worry about dropping frames.

You need to:
1. Rip it - get it on a more managable format on your hard disk (e.g. DVD Decrypter, DVDFab Decrypter).
2. Feed it into some sort of encoding program (I use StaxRip by Stax on this forum); that can depend on what video codec you want to encode to. That could be x264, XviD, DivX etc etc.
3. Set the options and everything like file size, audio bitrate in that program.
4. Encode!

That's how I would do it anyway.

...how can I get StaxRip
By using the search button. Whether you search inside or outside the Forum, this software is easy to find. Search works; use it and you'll not hear any grief. If your search comes up empty on this, or any future, topic, mention that, too. You'll receive better and faster help if you've first tried to help yourself.

Also, make sure you've gone over the Forum Rules (top of any page), this might keep you from shooting yourself in the foot.

When you find the link (whether on this forum or from a search engine), make sure you pick the latest version (which is 0.9.9.2 as of this post) and make sure you have .Net Framework 2 installed on your computer. If you don't, a quick pop-over to Microsoft should do it.

@scottie32 - could you clarify what format you want to end up with?

I understand you currently have the movie in DVD-VR format from a standalone recorder. However, you talk of wishing to convert to AVI "for editing". Do you actually wish to end up with an AVI file or were you planning to convert the edited AVI file back to DVD?

If the final output you wish to produce is NOT AVI, we're tackling this all wrong. Clarification would be helpful.

I'm in the same boat as this guy me thinks...

I have my dvd's I've ripped them into VOB and IFO files... Now I'm lost...

I wish to use my dvd clips to edit into a music vid, and that mean I need AVI files I believe. I have been following some tutorials on this site but I have been lost for the past 2 weeks so now I'm here:(

@scottie32How do I convert the file from DVD format to avi for editing? One simple choice, to create the .AVI - load it into MPEGMediator...

an easy way would be to use virtualdubmod, just drop the vobs and then select a suitable video compressor (go uncompressed/huf if your editor supports that or use something called cedocida dv which is a free dv codec that the virtualdub can use and edit the dv version... - depends on your free disk space and quality you want to achieve.)

p.s. dont use delta codecs like xvid, x264, divx for this task.

@TheBlueTree

Hi!

MPEGMediator accepts the ripped DVD's movie .VOBs as input - and converts them to an .AVI file. Depending upon which video codecs you've installed, it can create for example, DivX-compressed, XviD-compressed, 3IVX-compressed .AVIs...

You can obtain MPEGMediator by clicking on the following link:

I am in the same boat, I just bought a DVD camcorder, and have VideoStudio8 for editing, which works great from firewire source, and will import mpeg/avi files no probs, it will not import from DVD's though (video is fine, but no sound as no AC3 coder is available?).

Can some kind soul please give us the easiest way to get from a DVD disk to an mpeg/avi file with sound without having to buy software, so we can go from their ?

Alternatively if anyone knows of where I can download an AC3 code for ULEAD VideoStudio 8 so I can do this in one step, you would get on my christmas card list for life !

Thanks,.

Hi!Can some kind soul please give us the easiest way to get from a DVD disk to an mpeg/avi file with sound without having to buy softwareAs I mentioned in the post immediately preceding yours, "MPEGMediator", which is FREEWARE, accepts the ripped DVD's movie .VOBs as input - and converts them to an .AVI file.

Again, one place to obtain "MPEGMediator" is at (Click on the link):

Sorry for the double post here...
For the editing that I'm doing are u sure divX is the correct format I should be useing? I read in some of the tutorials that divx is erm.. difficult to use.

For editing you want to use Lagarith/ HuffYUV/ DV /MJPG or any other intra-frame compression codec (= easier to edit). Notice some of the above mentioned are lossless (HuffYUV/ Lagarith) while others are not (DV / MJPG). You'll have to decide which suits your needs as obviously the lossless ones take up a lot of hdd space.

TheBlueTree

what i do usually is edit in huff, only the final version will get huff -> lag treatment, so they will take less disk space.
