View Full Version : Playback problem with Dual Layer DVD backups

Hi, all.

I recently went to back up my 24 DVDs so I can watch them on vacation without worrying about losing the expensive originals, but it didn't quite work for reasons that mystify and frustrate me.

I used DVD decrypter to rip the files off the DVDs, in "normal" mode (not the ISO mode, as I was originally going to burn the DVDs onto cheaper single layer DVDs, until that became too much of a pain). It seemed to work, and I have ~46 gigs of .VOBs, .BUPs and .IFOs on my hard drive now, in 6 Video_TS folders. Then I burned those with Nero as a video DVD. It plays fine on my computer when I use whatever DVD playback program I have, but when I put it into a standalone DVD player, the disc freezes any time I try to skip ahead, and the display goes black where the menu should pop up if I don't skip ahead. (But these features work just fine on my PC.)

So, if anyone could tell me what dumb newbie mistake I made and how to fix it before I waste another 6 Dual layer CDs, I'd appreciate it.

Hi!

1) Is it all 6 different burned DVDs that exhibit the behavior you've described, or only one (You switch from talking about "them" to talking about "it")?

2) What brand and format of DL burnable media are you using?

3) Have you tried playing the burned media on a different standalone DVD player?

Yes, all of them do this. Sorry for not being more clear. I thought I left out a file somewhere, until ithey played flawlessly on my PC, so now I just have no idea.

2) What brand and format of DL burnable media are you using?

Verbatim +R

3) Have you tried playing the burned media on a different standalone DVD player?

Yes, but it's the same manufacturer.

@ bl4ck0ut

hi and welcome to the forum!

if you take a quick look (it is rather long and technical) at this thread:
PGCedit Seamless layer break discussion.. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110426)
you will quickly see that the topic of correctly setting/and burning a DVD- DL disc is not as simple as you might initially think.
you will also find that many of the "gurus" around here would recommend against using nero for your task at hand.

try opening the video_ts folder in pgc_edit and using its internal iso and layer break tools to create an iso that you can then burn using imgburn.

in future i would reccomend using dvd decrypter to rip in iso mode, the write in iso mode selecting the .mds file that is created along with the .iso (the .mds file contains the original layer break setting)

Wow, that was a lot of work to burn those DVDs... but thanks for the help, I did finally get it to work. Still, I think that for future vacations, I'll just bring the originals and buy a really good lock. :D
