Converting MP4 to AVI PLEASE HELPPP

hello guys! I got this file that I want to see and it's on ipod format (MP4) and the only thing I can play it with is Windows Media Player... but I would like to convert it to AVI so I can play it on my home dvd (which supports avi btw)

can you heeeelp meeeee say yes :) I've tried looking for "CONVERT MP4 TO AVI" and things alike on google but I'm not paying for an app to do this, I want a freeware converter. I was dissapointed to see that virtualdub doesn't do the job :(

virtualdubmod is such an old software...
however, avisynth is your friend. just import the mp4 with DirectShowSource() (provided you have all the necessary filters installed: haali media splitter for the mp4, ffdshow for audio and video) and re-encode video as divx/xvid and audio to mp3 with your favourite encoding tool.

Well, the MP4 could have one of two things in it:

1) AAC Audio and AVC Video
2) AAC Audio and ASP Video

AAC Audio is playable on very few standalone players, and it doesn't mux well into AVI anyway, so you should probably convert it to MP3. Use MP4Box with a GUI, like YAMB to extract the AAC audio, and then use BeSweet with a GUI like BeLight to convert that AAC to MP3.

If you have ASP video (Standard MPEG-4), then the conversion process will be very simple - just mux this ASP audio with the MP3 you just made. I suggest AVI Mux GUI.

If it's AVC (H.264), you will have to re-encode the video. Do what sharktooth suggests, use DirectShowSource(path) to load the MP4 into an AviSynth script, resize / fliter as necessary, and then encode into XviD or DivX, with settings that match the specs of your player.

Anyway, it would be much better to just re-encode from the original source, if you have a source. If you downloaded this file (and it kind of sounds like you did, since you don't know much about it) then you should not post to this forum with these kinds of questions in the future. I'm not saying you're a pirate, just making sure you're aware of the rules :)

If your MP4 source contains MPEG-4 SP/ASP (aka: MPEG-4 Part 2) video, then either YAMB or mp4UI could be used to extract the video stream to the .AVI container.

YAMB or mp4UI could also be used to extract the audio stream to a RAW (aka: elementary) stream.

Thanks guys!!! I think I'm getting there..... I didn't mention it was downloaded, and it's not. It's just a file from a friend who found this great format makes smaller files >:( and that my divx dvd can't read.

I got avisynth and created a file that just opens the video. Then I discovered I could drop this .avs file to virtualdub :) I know how to recompress in there! I don't know how on avisynth.

Anyway, I recompressed the mp4 into divx (w/mp3) with virtualdub.... The image is OK but the sound is skewed a few seconds, and it seems it just gets worse and worse as the avi plays.

BTW: if I open the AVS file with Windows player I see perfectly but the sound ALSO desyncs, is the problem here in the first place?

Your material needs to be legitimately owned by you.

geeeez! relax! I never mentioned it is a MOVIE... I said it is a FILE from a friend. He is totally into converting all the VCR videos from my group of friends of highschool from 12 years ago into digital video. Can't figure out why he chosed "mp4", no dvd player can play this... I guess probably because of the file size but I gotta ask him.

videos of me actually playing sports when I was young and willing to play!! that is something worth having :) (now I'm just a computer geek and if I run that is to catch a bus)
