Nero Video Decoder - NeVideo.ax not working?

I installed Nero 6 on my computer late in 2005, and with it came the NeVideo.ax decoder, which was nice since it worked great and let me play almost everything. Earlier this year, something happened when I burned a .mp4 file to a CD-RW since the decoder no longer worked after that, and I have been unable to get it working to decode video in Windows Media Player 10 or Media Player Classic ever since. I installed the 3ivx decoder for awhile, but it only worked on some files and was an unsuitable replacement for me. Radlight Filter Manager shows the merit as normal, and I've made sure it's registered. I originally had Nero 6.6.0.16, and downloaded the most recent 6.6.1.4 but reinstalling has made no difference, even using the Nero cleantools. I only have Divx and Haali's media Splitter (for .mkv and .ogm files, not .mp4) installed, and have never installed other codecs or codec packs. I've installed it on another computer to check, and it works just fine. I've searched the forum and many others but haven't found a similar problem or solution. I'd like to ask for any help or ideas so I can use the Nero Video Decoder again and watch H.264 content and play .mp4's. It might be something easy, but I'm at my wits' end. Thanks in advance.

why not haali splitter and ffdshow or CoreAVC?
hint: the nero 6 decoder works only in conjuction with the nero splitter...

I've opted not to use ffdshow or CoreAVC since I don't really need more stuff to do what something I already have does. I know some people prefer ffdshow and thats fine, but using the Nero stuff has played EVERYTHING I've thrown at it. It's nice and easy to just click any media file and have it play. It also barely uses any resources, which seems to be a big issue when it comes to decoders. If nothing else, I'd like to find out what the cause is and solve the problem for future reference, and also in case other Nero 6 users have this issue as well.

I had the problem long before I installed Haali's splitter, and it should just be for .mkv and .ogm files since I left the .mp4 box unchecked when using the installer. My best guess is its the NeVideo.ax decoder since on the computer that plays the files, the properties show WMP10 or MPC is using the Nero Video Decoder for video and the Nero Audio Decoder for audio, and on my computer, it just shows the Nero Audio Decoder is decoding the audio, and the video decoder info is blank. I'm stumped since reinstalling didn't do any good. If it were the splitter, wouldn't that have been taken care of with a reinstall as well?

My gf's computer used NeVideo.ax too for a while (in MPC at least), and after an update it didn't work anymore. You might have to reinstall an old version of nero to get it to work again (one of the early 6.x versions).

Other hint : people have reported that renaming their player to nero.exe worked (e.g.: mplayerc.exe -> nero.exe)

I can also suggest you go and disable nerocheck.exe at system startup, I don't have a clue as to what it does but it might be another solution for you (if it locks the filter out of any other splitter of something like that, dunno, just try). I disabled it and nothing happened since ;)

All these tricks are void if you have installed nero 7 btw.

I resorted to installing ffdshow since nero's decoder doesn't decode MPEG1 files as nice (even with post processing off, ffdshow was much nicer and smoother in my case), and I don't need to decode high-res H.264 content yet.

Nero Decoder still works for me with these versions in any player , including connection to Haali's splitter. just tested for fun.

I do seem to recall some issue of compatability discussed once , probably why I never updated past these versions

It stopped working before any updates with the 6.6.0.16 version I originally installed. Re-installing 6.6.0.16 did nothing. Uninstalling that and going to 6.6.0.18 did nothing on my computer, but as I mentioned, works perfectly on another computer decoding H.264 content and all. Uninstalling that and going to 6.6.1.4 did nothing different as well. I did try going back to the earlier versions, with no different results thus far.

I've read some about the Nero 7 issues, which is what the renaming was for as well I believe. The nerocheck.exe at startup was just for Nero to check for other burning software to avoid conflicts, as far as I've heard.

Koti, is your Nero the original install still, or have you ever removed and re-installed it?

AnimeCrush, ffdshow is faster than nero at decoding...
check the bond's decoders comparison (sticky), also nero decoder has some bugs that were never fixed...

I have had earlier versions that were removed before I installed 6.6.0.14 (but have never removed/reinstalled 6.6.0.14 or installed a version above this)

Note : Ffdshow with haali's splitter is my default avc decoder set up :)

nero usually places a lot of limitiations in their filters for making them pretty unuseable, so try to avoid them

anyways, for knowing whats going on on your system (i am sure you have messed up the filters installed), grab graphedit from the doom9 download site and try to render your file in it and tell us what filters are used

Trying to render a H.264 .avi file in Graphedit gives me the message "Cannot play back the video stream; no suitable decompressor can be found." The graph it renders shows no connection for the Stream 00 video after the avi splitter. The same thing happens with x264 files. Trying to render an x264 file in .mkv gives a message that "some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format", and the graph shows no connection to the video stream right after the file. Graphs for Divx/XviD .avi and .mkv files that play just fine render properly and show the video stream using Divx and Haali's splitter. I'm not sure if this is much help or enough information, please let me know if a more detailed description of the graphs or screen captures would be better.

How would I go about fixing the messed up filters? Would uninstalling everything (Nero, Divx, Haali, etc.) and reinstalling possibly fix this?

You might need to manually clean off every instance of nero anything after uninstalling if anything's still left over. Maybe you just have to give up nero outside showtime as a lost cause, if it refuses to install older versions and won't fix with a reinstall, and switch to ffdshow/coreavc instead.

I've uninstalled and cleaned Nero with nerotools, plus doing it manually though there doesn't seem to ever be anything left. I can't find anything in files or the registry that looks like it prevents NeVideo.ax from working. Older versions install just fine, but the video decoder doesn't appear to work in any version. I gather my filters are messed up as bond said, though I don'y know yet how to clean it up. I'm going to continue seeking a solution rather than giving up and installing more programs. Installing more might even make things worse.

As I stated, the NeVideo.ax decoder worked just fine for awhile on my computer, no limits or any problems. It also works just fine on another PC with the same specs as mine, so I don't think these earlier releases have the filter limitations as Nero 7 and perhaps the latest Nero 6.6.1.4 does.

Assuming that the filters aren't being limited, I'm still seeking a solution.

You know that's simply not true. And we know why you're doing it.
No way ffdshow is faster than nero. It depends on CPU and other.
That's comparison was made on P3.
If you want to see what results people have then recolect their timecodec results. No way ffdshow will be faster at this moment.

Best info yet. This being the case, any ideas on exactly what to do to the .dll in hopes of making nevideo.ax usable again? Edit it? Replace it? I've used Nero's cleaning tools after uninstalling and also searched and picked out Ahead and Nero registry entries before reinstalling, in case any registry entries were causing this, but so far re-installing makes zero difference.

As for the codec debate, this thread is about getting Nero 6's nevideo.ax decoder working again, not about how it compares to other codecs, whats faster, better, etc. I choose to use Nero, everyone should use what they like best. There's plenty of debate threads for those who want to voice their opinion.
