My understanding is x264 does not support the native h.264 soft subtitle features in the MP4 container. Does anyone know if this is a feature that will be coming to x264 anytime soon? Does anyone care about this feature?

I'm not sure what you mean. x264 is a video codec. The softsub format is a completely different segment of the video file. You can overlay ssa, ass, srt, etc subs over it without any troubles.

Won't that only work with AVI or MKV containers though?
My understanding was that h.264 offical supports ISO 14496-17 (MPEG-4 Timed Text) soft subtitles in the MP4 container. x264 doesn't support the creation of these though, only hard "burned in" subtitles.

x264 is a video codec it does not implement the complete standard (which includes audio, container, etc...)
to add the subtitles you need mp4box.
however h.264 is ONLY the VIDEO part of the mpeg standard...
moved, as this is not an avc issue (but imho more container/mp4 related. subs?)
