View Full Version : downsizing 1:1 HD to anamorfic 16:9 dvd

so lets say i have edited some HD footage,

it is in 1280x720 / 25p, ar=1:1

i wanna do a high-quality anamorfic dvd out of it,

1. should i just scaledown to 720x576 and set the 16:9 flag in mpeg2 encoder?
1.1. or should i scaledown to 704x576 and pad with black ...? (for correct aspect ratio)
2. what are the recommended downscalers (bicubic, bilinear .., putitsnamehere) ? so that the image wont get to flickery on interlaced displays?
3. what are the recommended downscalers (bicubic, bilinear .., putitsnamehere) ? so that the image will remain sharp as hell on new progressive and computer displays?

(additional probably useless info:
camera was hvx200, shot at 720p (native res is 960x720) -> upscaled to 1280x720 to conform better to premiere workflow with aspect HD.)

edit: not sure if that is the correct forum section...

You should scale down to 704x576 (no padding please). It is a valid DVD resolution and is the closest you can get to correct AR without padding/cropping. (AR error = 0.3%).

I normally use bicubic for this much downsizing.

ok, how about if my intermediate is anamorfic SD DV? (that can only be 720x576 imho) - and iam gonna do a dvd out of that one.

What? Your MPEG2 encoder doesn't accept avisynth scripts??? :(

Then you need to resize to 704x576 and pad to 720x576.

it does, however i just realized that HD wont edit fine on this machine (just a tiny to slow), so the plan is to do OFFLINE SD and then conform to HD and export a HD timeline, then feed that to HC via avisynth..., however if this for some reason fails, i need a backup plan :)

I own many commercial DVD's that aren't ITU-compliant and I've never seen a noticeable aspect error. So my suggestion would be to use 720x576, unless you're someone who actually does notice the aspect error. :)
